I pulled the tranny today. It needs more than 2nd gear. The forward clutches and the direct clutch was burnt.

Man that trucks a beast. I honestly didn't think the 80 would be any stronger than the Sterling. You might wanna look into a F550 rear end!

In stock form they are probably the same strength. But the 80 has more potential. I guess the spider gears are a known weak link in the 80 so it needs a Detroit to bring it up to speed.

When those spider gears broke I guess the shock load took the transmission case with it. Low roller clutch wadded up .

DAMN! What now? Does your truck shift gears while pulling? Im a manual guy but I understand you cant just manually shift gear while pulling with that kind of power.....

Yeah it goes from first second third and the converter locks before the first shift. But the pull that broke the case I had burnt the second shift solenoid so ran high side first gear and when the converter locked it broke the spiders

It's back together now. I had some spare transmissions so all it cost this time was 44 dollars and five gallon bucket of tractor fluid

Ha that's funny. I forgot a piece and didn't have 2nd gear on the test drive. I rebuilt it in my driveway. I went to the shop to get a hose with a guage to read the pressure in the second gear accumulator I checked in the old case and noticed a sleeve I didn't see the first time. Back in I went. It's ready for another test drive in the morning.
