Wanting to buy a F100, what to look for?

Hello everyone.

I'm looking at a F100 1951 model. Asking price is $10,500

Is there anything hidden I need to look for when checking these out?
Has a new chevy 350 with 300 miles on it, everything works on it. Missing tailgate, no AC, power steering or disc brakes. Is this a decent price judging by the photos? I was told there's minor rust underneath but nothing major.

Nice ride! And the Chevy 350 is popular for a reason. We wold all prefer it be a Ford engine but that's ok.

First things first is to verify the truck isn't loaded with bondo. Take a magnet to the entire truck and see how well it sticks. If it sticks with a "ting" you're on metal. If it's a "thud" you're on bondo.

Firstly it's a F-1 not F100. F100s did not start until 1953.
I think $10,500 is too much for this truck.
1.Poor firewall work. You do nnot have to do that to put one of those in there so what else is hacked.
2. No front fender seams. Those front fenders are two piece up front. This is a common rust area. The seams have been filled most likely just mudded over rust.
3. 1950 and earlier hood on a 51. This truck has the wrong hood so is the mechanism 1950 or 51 or it it a hacked up mix.
4. Semi Flat cheapo paint....
5. Wheels not my taste
6. seats not my taste
7. Where is the windshield wiper?
8. No outside mirrors

He might get that but I would not pay it. I prefer them more stock or period..

Welcome to the forum. Some very knowledgeable people will chime in soon I'm sure. You might want to take a magnet (soft flexible type - so you don't scratch it) and see if it has a lot of bondo on it. These trucks have a tendency to rust at bottom of fenders near running boards and near front. Beds rust at wood line and other places. Rust is biggest part of restoring problems. If it is not done correctly it can be a problem. I would check engine mounts and any welds that may have been done on it. It is a good looking truck so hope it works out for you. Have fun.

It all depends on what YOU want. I am not an F1 guy so I won't nit pick this truck. The truck presents well and it looks like it would be a nice driver. The market in your area will dictate the value of the truck, I always look at what is there and then figure out how much I could build it given a basic project truck cost and the cost of all the features. If you want a driver and this truck seems to be reliable then that's a big plus. The seats and wheels are easy swap-outs if you don't like them...the driveline not so much. Good luck...

Thanks for the info everyone. The seller "changed his mind" after I started asking questions about body work etc, said its no longer for sale.

It was probably for the best. Now go out and find another one. If you don't mind traveling there is one for sale in WI that is on a thread here. Some of the guys have seen it and may be able to tell you condition of it. I think it was less expensive than the one you were looking at. Good luck have fun.
