89 Shorty - 3.0L Vacuum problem
Hi All
1989 Shorty - 3.0L -
Im having a problem with vacuum somewhere and only get the blower out of the heat or Defrost ducts when I switch on the vent or AC (doesn't switch to the vents.
I know it's vacuum related, but where do I start with this? - I need to pull off the blower housing anyways to replace the blower motor (it's intermittent) and I also got a new resistor too for that... I see three colored lines that feed into there... but I don't really see or feel any cracks prior to looking inside.
I also see a valve looking unit on the side of this, that has a vacuum line to it - just wondering if this is a common fail item on these (everything is original)
Lastly - the cowl for the fan blower had some foam rubber there, and all that has gone by the wayside... I know it all needs to be replaced but, and suggestions on quality of foam rubber, etc... it seats just under the hood area.
Thanks!

What's that called?
Hi, What is that metal canister called? - Im thinking there is a leak in it, or if there is like a check valve in there that is not holding vacuum?
I'd love to find a vacuum hose kit for this thing - 20 little hoses all cut to the right lengths, and just replace one at a time, but right now, I just want my AC to work :-)
Thanks

It's a vacuum motor; it applies vacuum to s sealed diaphragm, which allows atmospheric pressure to push it. There is a link attached to the diaphragm that would then move a lever, which in this case would actuate an air door in the AC box. It's possible that the diaphragm may be leaking. You can test it with a hand vacuum pump.
If you have a leak, it most likely comes from one of the skinny plastic lines. Follow them all to make sure none of them are cracked or broken.

vacuum line comon leak areas
90 - just wanted to pick your brain on if you think it's one of those red and white lines that are fed into the shroud hosing... didn't know if that seemed more common than this motor...
Wish I had a part number for it - the one that is right there and next to the blower...
any thoughts on what sizes of lines I should get to replace these little ones, or bigger ones for that matter too... bet it would idle better... all lines are original with the van - so almost 30 years old.

I will have to take some photos - I don't think mine is attached to anything but a vacuum line... maybe its just a canister.
It's stormy today, so, I will take some good shots tomorrow, and this way, everyone can help me better.
One thing that is tough for sure, is seeing all these lines, since the top of the engine is to the top of the frame there... I remember changing the Distributor cap and rotor and you have to just go by feel back there... these dog houses give you "just enough" room to reach stuff, but not enough to really see too well
