Think I Lost My Water Pump

Was heading to the coast to do some camping this last weekend. Overheated on the way, limped back to a safe parking lot to wait for a tow truck. Lost a bunch of coolant out the pressure cap, filled back up with water while I slowly pulled back into town.

Thanks. We AAA'd the Ex back home and brother brought his Ex out to tow the trailer home. Parts on the way already and I'll give it a go myself in the garage. Cancelled our camping trip this time.

On the bright side, changing out the V10 water pump is pretty straight forward. Wear gloves since the fan blades are sharp! I just set the fan at the bottom of the shroud and worked around it. Good time to check that fan clutch too.

No stopped parts actually. We're guessing the plastic impellers on the OEM water pump (i doubt it's ever been changed) are all broken off so the pump is spinning, but nothing is being pushed. We'll find out when I pull it off.

Yup, I'll try to get ahead of whatever other small preventative maintenance I can while things are torn apart.

Never done a water pump before, so this should be interesting 😀

Technically you know where your water pump is.

It just isn't working as it should!

Sorry to hear about your misfortune! Good Luck with the R&R!

new Gates pump is here. Going to get a new radiator and hoses while I'm at it, so still dead in the driveway for now.

should swap in some good hose clamps if your rad hoses are fastened with those sketchy plier required factory clamps since they tend to snap in half over time when driving

Yeah I've got a handful of new hardware coming and I'll use new clamps and such for it all.

Water pump is here already, waiting on a new radiator, fan clutch, upper and lower hoses, heater hoses, tstat and tstat o-ring.

How long do the V10 water pumps last? I'm at 214,000 and mine is probably original. Everytime I try to do preemptive maintenance I get burned. I already replaced the radiator and hoses.

I'm at just over 199K. I'll report back when I've torn everything apart. I'm still only guessing that it is a water pump issue, hence why I bought a bunch of the other replacement parts too.

not sure about how long they last. I'd imagine it's kind of case by case. Getting a water pump in there with aluminum impellers is probably a good call for anybody over those oem plastic ones.

I'm not sure I want to make any changes. I've never had a water pump last this long. In my experience, they leak out of the weep hole so you have some warning.
