1997 7.3 Idle Surge - NOT while driving though

I have a 97 F250 Powerstroke 7.3. When you crank it up, cold or warm, it immediately surges at idle up and down about 800-1000 rpm. However, if you simply press the gas pedal and rev it up to about 2000 rpm, hold it for about 5 seconds and then release, it idles fine. No issues while driving or stopping at red lights. Any ideas?

Auto tranny? If so, try starting it while tranny is in neutral.

Well I went take off the ICP sensor plug to clean it up and the whole end of the ICP sensor came off in my hand.................... I'll try the starting in neutral deal once I get this replaced.

Well that wasn't the problem. I just put in a new ICP and Cam Pos Sensor and still doing the same thing. Starts right up and immediately jumps between 500 and 1100 rpm back and forth. I press the pedal and hold it at about 1200 rpm for 10-15 seconds and let off and she purrs like a kitten like normal.

Any oil usage? Oil filter black? Has it done this before any major work on the engine? Mine did this when I had split shot injectors with a non split shot PCM.

Farmert. Yes, it is an auto tranny. I just did what you said and it did NOT do it!!! Turned the key, put it in neutral, cranked it, and she idled just fine. What the heck? What does that tell me?

A little oil usage but not much. Oil filter is fine. Never done this before and no major work done.

Check the multi position switch on the side of the tranny for loose/dirty connections, or it may be bad. I'm not an auto guy, but have seen the switch was the problem in cases like this. Someone with more knowledge of this will probably check in.
