Windshield Wiper Issues

So my windshield wipers are having trouble going through the full motion. They stop at the point the wipers are "up @ about 12 o'clock" and stay in stasis for a few seconds then proceed with the full motion. It's pretty consistent (95%+ of the time) and I can hear clicking in the delay wiper module when that happens (the stalling).

So what I have done to troubleshoot:

1. I provided the motor a good ground (ran an extra temp ground to the motor case and also the mount plate) with no effect on the issue.

2. I took the delay module out of the equation. With only the switch directly attached to the circuit, instead of hearing clicking in the module I instead heard arcing in the switch.

For what it is worth, the delay wiper and other modes work fine (meaning the delay module and switch are at least trying to do their job correctly).

I'm tempted to replace the motor, linkage, and switch, but would like feedback on any recommendations.

What kind of delay module do you have? I've been thinking of hooking one up to my single speed wipers.

It's the 1980's style where you have it re-pin the washer jet wire (green wire). It's a mostly plug and play mod, but I don't believe it'll work for a single speed system.

Did you open up the governor/control box, prior to installing it, and check all the solder connections? These modules are notorious for broken component leads/solder joints. Resoldering them almost always restores full function to them.

This intermittent setup came out of an '87 Ford truck and was installed in my friend's '72 F100. Prior to installation, I cracked the box open to inspect the component leads and solder joints for breaks. Fortunately, nothing was wrong on this module that required any resoldering. After shortening the wiper switch shaft and repinning the wire for the windshield washer circuit, it was good to go.

Steve, thank you for the reply and the information about the control modules - I never knew that about them.

In my troubleshooting yesterday I did remove the intermittent module and ran the switch straight and the result was the same.

I am assuming the clicking sound you hear is the gears inside the wiper motor skipping teeth. Use something metal like a long screw driver to locate the click, Tip touching the wiper motor and the handle end in your ear. Yes, this really does work.

The clicking sound was actually the relay in the delay module. When I took the delay module out of the circuit then the switch sounded like it was internally arcing.
