Tom, The T98 is a bolt in replacement for the T9 with the exception of the driveshaft. The driveshaft will need to be shortened about 2". The rear motor mount will line up just fine. If you measure from the centerline of the bolt holes on the transmission foot to the face of the half bell, it will be the same on both transmissions.

I've taken a couple of better photos to verify my transmission is a T59. I also have a picture of the mount, though the numbers are a little tough to read. They appear to be OIT7049. Maybe this can help identify what truck it came from. It is just a matter of curiosity at this point because I have started to fabricate a crossmember to support it. Sorry about the up-side-down photos. Not sure what I did when I attached them.

I just realized that this says T59 not T98 which I was convinced it is. Now I am really confused!

That is a 1945-1951 spur gear 4-speed. It is an unsyncronized transmission. Rear bearing retainer/mounts are available for that transmission to use it in an F1.

But I thought the original crossmember is gone? Unless you really want to put up with a non-synchro trans, you have a world of choices available to you. T5, Saginaw, Muncie, other B-W's...

The T9 / T8 crashbox four speed was an option in the F-1s. If you really want to run one then get the correct rear bearing retainer / rear motor mount to fit the F-1. This part is different from the F-2 and larger rear bearing retainer. Since almost everyone rips these transmissions out of their truck you should be able to get parts at giveaway prices (shipping only). If you truly have no cross member you are a candidate for finding and installing a 49-50 Mercury overdrive transmission....

I'm pretty sure the T98 was never an option in the F-2 or F-3. I think it was an option in F-4, F-5, and F-6 behind the 226 and 239 motors. I think it was part of the package you got if you optioned the F-6 with the 254 motor.

Mark, you are correct - today I finished re-assembly of the T-98 and took measurements. They are the same.

The centre 16" or so of the original crossmember was cut out by the previous owner. I have a 48 frame that has the crossmember, but rusted very thin. I plan to cut the middle section out of it and weld into what is left of mine and plate the weak sections. So, I guess that when that is done, I will try to find the correct rear bearing retainer/mount for an F1 to use with this 59T transmission that I have.

F-1Fred, I checked this morning and I have a 4-speed with the bearing retainer/mount you need. But, after looking at the transmission, you will need more than just the bearing retainer/mount. I sold the driveshaft yoke from the transmission I have a couple of years ago. You will need the retainer/mount, the yoke and the tailshaft out of the transmission. The tailshaft is different than to one in the 4-speed that you have. I can pull the bearing retainer and tailshaft from the transmission I have for you, but you will still need to find a yoke.

Mark,
Thanks for the offer. However, after digesting the comments from ALBUC F-1, 38 coupe, and others (including my wife behind the scenes), I have been convinced that using my non-synchro spur gear 4 speed is not a good decision. I spoke with Glenn Sanders in Maryland last evening and he believes that he has a synchro top loader 3 speed transmission with correct mount and drive shaft for my truck. So it looks like I am now good-to-go, so to speak.

That is a good choice. You will be much happier with the 3 speed I'm glad you found what you need.
