Positive round?? Rear gearing.

I just picked up a 54 F100 with I6/3 on tree. just looking things over and is this truck 6 volt, POSITIVE ground or is this yet another thing this guy had goofed up?
did I get lucky with a streetable 3.92 gear?(says in glove box ID tag) or were there even higher gears available ( lower numbers). I assume there were much steeper gearing available. Years ago my neighbor bought a 55 Cheby 1/2 ton truck that had 4.56 in it. thanks, crossy

Yes, they were positive ground / 6 volt until '56. 3.92 was the standard gear ratio, option for 4.27.

Thank you-- well that's good. I had it running off a separate gas can already. the HOLLEY? carb leaks from bowl, but engine sounded fine. I found a receipt for head gasket in glove box along with 2 lbs. of mice turds. ANyway, do you have any idea if the steering box is adjustable on these? I know how to adjust, but at a quick glance i did not see a n adjustment screw. it's a bit hard to see . thanks, crossy

Welcome to FTE
Yes the box has a screw & jam nut on the engine side but you may need to have someone move the steering wheel and see what all is loose. Also before you adjust the box check the mounting bolts (very common for them to be loose) might even add a little locktite on the threads. Once the box is locked to the frame the steering wheel, column, and box are all one or bolted togeather so anything loose is outside the cab. Keep us posted on your in devour.

box was just replaced with a "GOOD' one by previous owner. lol ---you can turn the steering wheel about 45* before anything moves, and I already checked all the parts for play, and was expecting LOTS in the components, but it's almost all in the box. thanks- Crossy
Truck was a true barn FIND(2 car garage). took me & son 3 hours to get it out. Rustoleum red, and very little rust for an east coaster. To give you an idea of the previous owner--- it has 4 different kinds of tires on it, including 2 bias and 2 radial. .

Welcome to FTE the best Ford Truck Forum on the world wide Web!

When you have time show us pics of your trucks.

45° play, huh? That's not too bad. So that is like turning from 12:00 to to halfway between the 12 and the 3. But it should be tighter than that. I think mine is worse than that on my 54.
