New Cam installed timing help

You can tell if you damaged the cam by doing a simple compression test...Bad hole damaged cam....Which timing chain set did you install, If you used a 71 or later, they would have a 2 degree retard built in which will effect bottom end power..You also might check for a vacuum leak at the manifold....D44HD

New Cam installed timing help

When you break in a cam you need to have the engine reving 1500 to 2000 - rpm for the first 15 to 20 minuets. The cam journals are lubricated by oil pressure but the cam lobes are only lubricated by crankshaft slpash. Thats why its important to keep the rpm,s up....D44HD

New Cam installed timing help

Oops to many posts here....By the way if you have wiped out a lobe on ths cam, you will be able to see tiny flakes of metal in your oil on the dipstick...It makes the oil look kind of like metalic paint.....D44HD

New Cam installed timing help

i installed a 1990 model cloyes chain set #c-3057k. i believe it is just a stock replacement. so what you are saying is if i get a a 70 model timing set it will not be retarded? what is the compression supposed to be on a 90 model 302 bored .060 flat tops with valve reliefs and stock heads?

New Cam installed timing help

oh ok then i checked the oil yesterday and there was not any metal shavings
anyway the motor runs fine but it should still have more power. i know i still have to degree the cam and fine tune it but if it still does not gain the power it should have then i might change cams. i checked and fixed vaccuum leaks last weekend still not all of the problem and i got my charging system working finally. i hate wiring.

New Cam installed timing help

You would be better off buying an aftermerket timing set with the 3 holes, That way you can set it straight up, 4 degrees advanced or 4 retarded....4 advanced will give you better bottom end. Are you running 10 degrees advance on your ignition timing ?....d44hd

New Cam installed timing help

yes because the aftermarket PERFORMANCE sets wont have the late modle retard built in, in other words straight up, will be straight up! DW
