460 DEGREE OF ANGLE WHEN MOUNTED

I am in the process of pulling my 460 out of my truck (64), It is backed up by a C6 and a 9 inch rear. My question is, how much of degree should the motor sit once mounted to the motor mounts. I took a measurement off the intake flange and it shows just at 5 degree. Seems a lot to me. Never noticed it till I got the front clip off. It may be at that angle due to trans and drive shaft angle??

By the way, I am pulling the motor for the crank is either cracked or the bearings are out of it. Crank shaft can be moved up and down by hand.

Thanks guys,
Hammy

Basically you want the carb flange level.

FWIW - The high-compression early 460's (1968-71) were at a pretty steep angle in the big cars they were built for. Couldn't help but notice it with a hood open. So steep, that a wedge-shaped phenolic spacer was between the intake manifold and the 4300's carb base, to get the carb near level. C6 trans, Ford 9 3/8" rear, massive driveshaft with double-cardans with centering yokes on each end to make the driveshaft length/mass constant velocity.

My birds,429 looks to be sitting pretty level.

Thanks for the input....Yes, I am thinking the same as to the carb and it being level. I can see the intake has somewhat of a angle to it as well and I would believe it is made that way for a small amount of degree for the motor but not the carb. It is a eldelbrook performer intake.
SO I measured the degree on the crank shaft and that puts the motor to almost 9 degree tilt? Seems very strange However, I think it is all due to radiator, fan and possibly drive line.
What should this 73 lincoln motor be sitting as for degrees? I am in the process of pulling it to check out the crank today. If everything else looks ok and need to replace the crank, I will reinstall and would like to make sure I attempt to install correctly.
Thanks,
Hammy

Sorry, I think I answered my own question....If carb is at 5 degree and needs to be at zero, the motor is at 9 degree...I say 3 to 4 degree on the motor. ? And then have to fish thru the rest of it as to drive line.
Thoughts, input?
Thanks,
Hammy

I agree, the Carb should set as close to level as possible at ride height.

I have a '64 I'm trying to mount a 460 with a C6 transmission in right now. What motor mounts are in yours? Can you post a picture of them? Does your motor have a rear sump oil pan in your application? Has the cross member just under the firewall been removed to squeeze that big motor in there? Let me know.
Thanks,
Doug

Hey Doug.....
Not sure of the motor mounts for that install was done by the PO. I looked for a part number on them but no avail. It has a front sump, and yes the cross member had been removed, rivets cut out, cut in half, and then mounted back in the frame and they made a bracket to bolt to two pieces back together in the center. When I pulled the 460 i took the cross member out to remove the motor w/ trans so I a sure that is why it was cut. Makes it easier to install / pull a motor w/ trans.

Looks like they may have purchased a cross mount for a 460, then hacked these two brackets onto the cross mount, found the spot to weld the cross mount onto the frame. It was ugly in my eyes. I will be honest, I am somewhat glad i pulled the motor to see this set up. Bad stuff. I never like to knock any ones work, for I am sure it was a bit hard to get it to fit....however......Not what I would have called clean, safe! I know by doing some research that the 460 needs to be mounted a bit high in the 64, otherwise you end up having to notch the front cross member. THUS why the motor was sitting at such an angle!
I am sure there is a lot more good installs for 460 on here, just do a search. Make sure you do your homework, and or you may already have..but any way...before you start.
There are a lot of other good engine installs going on these days, a lot more options.
I am going with a Crown Vic front end swap, w the compete drive line install as well.

I do not have the availability right now, but I will take some pics and send them to you.

Thanks Hammy, I really appreciate it. My son has taken an interest in the new project. He's been a big help trying to stuff the motor/tranny combo into the truck last weekend. I'll be taking my son to the Goodguys West Coast Nationals this Saturday in Pleasanton, California so I'm hoping to get some info or hopefully a few pictures of installs for some ideas. I'll be installing a Melling high volume oil pump in my build of the 460 which requires a rear sump oil pan in mine. I think the rear sump is the only way I'll be able to stuff the motor lower and farther back for a better balance of weight and center of gravity. The corvette C4 IFS certainly helps too. It's lowered the front end about 5 inches. So ultimately, no matter what motor height I end up with, it will be lower than stock. I would like it to handle well. Thinking I might introduce my son to Autocross with it.

I will have to cut out that cross member too.
