VIN decode; 1963 f100

F100K404568

Very clean truck. in 4x4 configuration. Thinking of purchasing. Being sold as an original 4x4.

The frame has been chopped and a short bed put on. I 'm ok with that. Just want to be sure about the rest. Help on the VIN?

F10 is a 2wd. F11 would be a factory F100 4x4.

F10 = F100 2WD (F11 = F100 4WD).

0 = No such VIN engine code. It's either: B = 262 1V I-6; C = 292 2V; J = 223 1V I-6.

K = Kansas City MO Assembly Plant.

404568 = 1963, assembled April 1963.

Keep in mind the V.I.N. is on the frame not the door. If the fram number matches your paperwork then it's a legit 4x4. Someone may have changed the door and I am certain it has "never been offroad"

True enough. Frame it is (maybe).

Truck registered by its specific VIN that was also stamped atop the right (passenger) side frame rail, either in front of...or partially under the cab.

VIN on Warranty Plate known as the Warranty Number. Ford said it was not for title or registration purposes (as it was too easy to change).

1963/66: Warranty Plate riveted to the left door face below the latch.

People replaced damaged left doors with used doors. 99.9% of the time, they failed to install the original Warranty Plates on the replaced doors.

Problem is the VIN is what is on the title. Trucks out of state. If I find the frame is the correct VIN, could be a complete mess trying to get the tile to accurately reflect what the VIN on the frame is, since a title is already issued based on the door tag.

Truck registered as a 2WD, but if the DSO code stamped on the Warranty Plate has 6 numbers, it may have been sent out after it left the assembly line to be converted to 4WD

1959: Factory installed 4WD introduced for F100/250, but it was also possible to have 2WD's converted to 4WD

Most 4WD conversions were performed by Marmon-Herrington in Indianapolis IN .. Will have a plate on the dash on how to operate the 4WD

Considering that the frame has been shortened and a short bed installed, this was probably a "hack job" performed by previous owner converting it to 4WD by getting the parts from a 1961/64 F100 4WD

Most people are unaware that the SERIES code (first 3 digits of the VIN) and the MODEL code stamped on the Warranty Plate define 2WD from 4WD

So, the seller with his F10 2WD SERIES code is claiming this as an original 4WD .. It is not...because if it was...the SERIES code would be F11 = F100 4WD

1957/60 Styleside beds installed on the following 1961/66's. Called the "wrong" beds by enthusiasts, because the bed lines don't match the cab lines.

1961/65 F100/250 4WD / 1961/66 F350 (9' Express) / 1962/63 F100/250 2WD / 1966 F250 4WD
