Speed Density system and 'K&N'
I have a question. Now that I know a little more about my truck. I realize that I must have the old speed density type fuel injection system. The first thing I did was put a replacement K+N filter in the stock airbox. The truck runs fine and I notice no problems. I did read that modifications on trucks using the speed density type unit may acutally cause it to get worse gas mileage. Is this possible? Should I go back to the regular air filter? Thanks.
Is the Mass air unit more fuel efficient seeing as how it fires only a single injector at a time as opposed to a bank at a time?
regards,
Bryan

You shouldn't have any problem with the K&N kit on the speed density system. Now if you decide to go with exhaust mods, and engine mods you will experience problems. It is VERY possible to get worse gas mileage with mods on a speed density. Usually what will happen is the engine will run very lean which in-turn will cause performance-gas mileage problems. Stick with the K&N filter but dont do any other "Big" mods.

I put a K&N drop-in filter in my '93 F-150 with it's s/d 302 and I got 2-3 mpg better. Better power too. If you question it, go ahead and get a paper filter and try that. I doubt you'd see an improvements going back to a paper filter.
Brett_D: That is an awesome pic of your 87 or 88? I absolutely love
that color combination.
Had to throw mine in there too. I gotta figure out how to make a thumbnail view of them too!

I have no doubts that I would increase power itself. But I believe if other mods are done the Fuel-Air ratio will suffer....
