What you want is a crate engine from this guy. He will help you build it yourself if you would rather do it that way.

Heads changed when they went from carb to EFI. Carb heads have round ports, EFI heads have rectangular ports. If you stick with the EFI intake, you're gonna need to use your old heads as well. Same deal with exhaust manifolds. Short blocks can interchange, but you probably want a newer top end if you're trying to keep it simple.

If you decide to build an engine, I have EFI heads (with assembled valve train) valve covers, ring gear, clutch, etc. etc. Tons of extra parts when I built a new engine. PM me if you want any of it.

Some people say it is not as simple as this. They say some carb heads will bolt up to the EFI intake.

Beyond that there are aftermarket intakes built to make injector installation simple.

Well I'd love to buy a crate engine to drop in but thats just not in the budget, I have way to many other projects. Thats why i was looking into wrecked, non titled, or trucks with other issues so i could get them for cheap. Isn't 87 fuel injected?

I might rebuild mine down the road, its got a ton of crankcase pressure so it blows oil out of the breather hose like crazy. Think it started as a intake gasket allowing the EGR system to pump into the engine but its been overheated several timessince then so i worry i blew a headgasket(s) or warped the heads...honestly haven't torn into much but it was driven hard for a long time

Engine wise, 87.5-93 efi are the same block AND heads, right?

I never really dug into the 460 efi swap question too much. Off the top of my head I can't think of any huge external differences. You might get lucky and find a rare MAF version and have to switch some parts.

Internally I think the pistons and heads changed. The later version is probably a little less detonation prone, (better quench?).

There is a "school bus version" you would be better to avoid. (Maybe 7.0L) Dump trucks, etc.

Pickup, van and motorhome engines should swap without making you want to kill yourself.

For any swap you are way ahead if you have a running donor parked right next to your truck.

Post lots of pictures if you do this.

Not wanting to go extreme, just a simple 460 to 460 engine swap with a compatable year with minimal work needed.

The 87 is probably carbed. Should be able to look up the VIN coding and see if the seller will check the right digits for you.

8th Position – ENGINE TYPE
G 8-460 (7.5) EFI
L 8-460 (7.5) 4BC

Easy Button: Ask the seller if the engine has a carb. or is it fuel injected.

The most likely answer is carb., therefore it's a pass if you want an easy swap. The only thing you can use is the short block.
