That is where I am at. I am doing everything I can to leave "well enough alone". I go from leaving the OEM modified turbo to replacing everything with T4/364.5 to KC 38R-366...

I am grateful that I have decisions such as these in front of me though. This morning I was thinking that I will just get some new AD injectors from Alliant and call it a day. Then, I thought well I could get the KC and be good to go for a very long time.

Who knows... Still waiting to see what Blue has to say, but I have to agree that 1250 degrees with 5K lbs in tow is not ideal for me. Each truck is different though because there are so many variables like tunes, driving style, CAC/exhaust condition, tires, trailer weight, etc...

Yep I have almost ordered both several times. If I see up pipe leaks in the future it will be a big influence in what I do. I hope to just drive it.

I want 400 hp from 900 to 3000 rpm with 1100 egt 26000# towing uphill with a 50mph headwind 65-70 mph 10% grade 25 mpg Is that really too much to ask for.

After reading all these post here are my thoughts. The KC38r-366 is a different turbo period. It shares the name of the original 38R that most are speaking about. When I decided to look at turbo replacements i did consider the T4/ 366sxe kit. But once you add up the most basic options that are added to the basic kit your north of 2600 period. And the sxe turbo's are 360 thrust bearing compared to a dual ball bearing turbo. No brainier there.
Plus I personally saw no advantage to going to the T4 kit except you can exchange turbo's for a cost savings.

My truck personalty is set up for street performance not towing that's what I wanted my truck to do. I'm sure if the KC turbo was set up to be a tow pig it would preform as well as a t4 if not better. When I gave my example of towing 5k at 1250* I was in the middle of a 13 mile 6% grade on my 85HP tune. I'm sure if I was to run the same hill on my 65HP towing tune I would be equal to what the T4 guys are seeing. Keep in mind I'm running 238/100's. So it's not a fair comparison to the others that are running 160 or 180 injectors.

As for spool up my truck at 1400 rpm starts to build boost about 7 psi on my street tune to over 44 psi within a second. It's a beast. There always a different way to build a truck and I am very happy with how mine came out. Just my opinion...

Blue, thanks for your opinions. I for one am very grateful you are here to share them with us.

Just to be clear, you have the 2nd generation KC38R-366 right?

There were some slight changes from the 1st generation, and just for the record I wanted us all to be on the same page when comparing apples to oranges (T4 to direct fit).

I believe I do have the second gen. Would you know the differences? I bought it in December from Charlie.

Probably not, but if you bought it in December I would be willing to bet you have the 2nd generation. There are a few minor changes, like a larger turbine wheel, but nothing major. He was much happier with the 2nd generation than the 1st though, I can tell you that.

I'm pretty sure it is. He was having delivery issues with bearings when I bought mine.

Couple of short videos I took on the way home. One is cruising and the other is a half throttle blip to 60+. Tune is the 1023 street shredder. Cummins killer is much stronger.

And for less than 1500 you can have a drop in. That will give you similar performance as a T4 kit. But with a drop you retain your current CAI. Can pass emissions if your state requires it. And a Dual Ball Bearing turbo. Not a 360 thrust bearing.

Different strokes. But I do want to clarify, the T4 will use your current CAI. My Gen 2 S&B fits better with my T4 than it did the 38R. Also, the KC is sold out, so you can't actually buy it :-) This also leads into long term support. BW is well established and this may be a consideration.

Please let me know when they are available since your link still says sold out. Also Don't forget a set of new bellowed up pipes to go with the new turbo. (several options at different prices) Now the price is closer. That is why I am undecided. Hopefully the kc turbo is available when I "need" to upgrade.
