Hi all! I need to replace the computer in my 94 f150 after it got damaged by water. I've read that I should use dielectric grease on the connector to prevent this in the future. I assume this stuff is non-conductive, so where should I be applying it? It seems counter productive it put it on the pins. Thanks for the help!
Dielectric grease is a non-conductive, silicone-based grease that's designed to seal out moisture and prevent corrosion on electrical connectors. It also disrupts the flow of electrical current, which makes it good for lubricating and sealing the rubber parts of electrical connectors.
I would think NO on using it. Curious as to how you got water in there. Damage or water crossing? Did it kill the PCM or do you have symptoms?
I put as much Dielectric grease in the PCM plug as I can get in there. Yes I put it in the pin holes and on the pins.
I have had no problems with any of the PCM that I have used it on. I use it to make sure the water stays out.
Yes it is a non-conductor but it does not stop the pins from making contact.
I wasn't getting spark with it connected and the fuel pump runs continuously. When I disconnect it I get spark again. Not the most advanced troubleshooting, but I'm fairly certain it's the problem.
It sure sounds suspect. But there is a lot of electrical besides the PCM. If you have time to fool with it, you could start a thread with, Losing spark with PCM installed. And you will get some good answers and ideas and hopefully confirm your suspicions and its free. Would hate to see you buy one and still have an issue. I have never heard of a PCM going bad from water in normal use. That makes it more suspect it could be something else. Anyway good luck to you, Sandy
There is a lot of threads on here where someone washed their engine and then the PCM let out smoke.
When the grease drys up and you wash it then you have this problem also.
Yes it sounds like the PCM is bad as long as it it has a good ground on the passenger fender and power to the PCM from the power relay closing when the key is turn to the run/start position.
