I read about two instances where the hubs are vacuum operated and rotting out caused the problem. I don't have a 4x4 but the lines were up by the front wheels. No idea if that is it but check that out.

So you've used 4wd in the last few days since this started. The 4wd will work with minimum vacuum. If you didn't hear any gear noise grinding when you were in 4wd you may be ok on the hub vacuum. Or you may not. Good luck

No vacuum hubs on an '88 F250.
