Will a new Ecoboost meet my needs?

Hey everyone. First post on here and I am SURE this is a topic that is beat to death...but, looking for advice from you all regardless.

I had an 08 6.4L that I had fully tuned and was an animal. I sold it last fall and bought the wife a new SUV. We are doubling payments and should have it paid off next spring which is when my new truck is coming. I have the itch already, but trying to decide which route to go is killing me.

What will I use it for?

I will be driving to work a few days a week and mainly a hunting vehicle. However, I do have a 50HP Kubota and a 4k lb. 14' dump trailer that I will occasionally use/need to haul. I would be perfectly content with an F150 is the need to haul a little dirt and haul my tractor wasn't needed. Those days will be few, MAYBE a few days/month in the summer. Everytime I haul it (since I sold my 6.4) I use my brothers stock 04 Duramax, which pulls the trailer and tractor great. Specs wise, very similar to the EB.

I am not looking for 650 HP and 1000lb/ft torque, but I want to be able to do what I need without borrowing a truck.

So...will the 2017 Ecoboost fit my needs?

Probably.

But there's more to a Super Duty than just the engine.

There's the frame, the brakes, the running gear, transmission, etc.

And what I've found is that the Super Duty isn't that much more than the F-150 as long as you stay with the Gas Engine. The Diesel is a $9,000 option. That's where you get tore up.

It's all a trade-off. The F-150 rides better, will get better fuel economy, is smaller and lighter, easier to park and more.

The Super Duty is badass. It's work first, play second. The F-150 is the other way around.

Just my $.02

And worth even less

It sounds like an Ecoboost would work perfectly for you.

A Super Duty isn't really needed unless you are towing or using it for grunt most of the time; the Ecoboost is more of a nice daily driver engine with that extra surprising punch of towing ability.

If you need relatively decent towing capacity (well within the capabilities of the 3.5 EB) 1% of the time, but want fun around-town driving 99% of the time, you will probably be disappointed with the Superduty's 6.2 or 6.7. They are great for towing, but are pretty boring engines for around-town use. It seems like 'play first, work second' is actually what you are looking for!

The Ecoboost gets a little less incredible when towing enormous 5th wheel toy haulers, which is where the 6.7 Powerstroke would probably come in. You are probably hauling far less than the weight of what an Ecoboost struggles with, so I would say go for it!

Well now. That certainly is helpful..... I'm not even going to bother asking why you say that....

Google ecoboost problems and there is your answer. It also has a very high rate of buyer remorse.

Seems you are the only EB hater on this forum. I prefer the 5.0 myself, but I will never tell anyone to stay away from one of the most popular engines on the market today.

Smoke and mirrors. If you have ever owned an ecoboost, you would understand.

He has a field day over on FRF.com where there is no moderation.

You can google any product followed by "issues" and create all that smoke and mirrors you think you're talking about.

The Ecoboost would be the perfect motor for the OP. The ONLY reason to get the V8 is if you're buying it for a sport sound personal toy rather than a working truck. I won't even give the V8 the snow plow advantage because I don't believe in using little trucks for snow plows, that's what tractors are for.

Well, I HAVE owned an EcoBoost for a couple of years now. It runs smooth and quiet, pulls like a son-of-a-gun, and I'm real happy with it.

You can google for problems on just about anything you choose, but if you are unable to do some intelligent parsing of the things you read (kind of like the orange nimrod you-know where), then you will come away with a distorted view of reality.

375hp, 470 ft lbs tq, 12200lb tow rating.

FYI, I put 147k on my first ecoboost.
The gen 2 is way better.

I worked my 2012 3.5L EcoBoost pretty hard. After 100,000 miles I had 13 oil changes, 1 spark plug change and 1 coolant change. The 3.5L EcoBoost is one of my all time favorite engines. I now have a 2.7L EcoBoost, clearly, no buyers remorse here. The 2.7 has plenty of power and gets good gas mileage.
I would look to get a tow package with an integrated brake controller. You'll be happy to have that feature with a dump trailer or equipment trailer.
