TSB 15-0131 Timing Belt & Phasers

I know this topic has been a heated one and has ruined or turned people away from Ford, I myself am caught in the middle of whether to address this TSB and pay the $3,000.00 ish to have it fixed or sell the truck. I am extremely worried that this newest TSB to address this issue will FAIL like the others before it (TSB 14-0194). This is for the 3.5L EcoBoost engines produced 2011 through May 2015.

Here is a link to the TSB: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/a...0&d=1486177938

So... My question to you that have paid or had this covered under warranty, has the newest TSB FIXED your issue?

I have a 2013 with 71K miles and it started ticking around 68K, of course the flippin warranty stopped at 60K and the dealer said Ford won't help in the matter. Let alone the dealer I took it to FOX FORD in Grand Rapids MI, had my truck for 3 days and DID NOTHING, just detailed it and let is sit on their lot for 4 days, while I was traveling. I have it in writing from their tech and scheduler, scheduled the work to be done a month in advance. Pretty pissed about that level of service. It was a bad enough experience and considering the expense of this TSB I am seriously considering just dumping the truck and switching brands.

Sorry for the rant, so.....back to my question, has this TSB of replacing the main chain and phasers actually addressed the problem for good?

I should also add that I left Ford a letter of my experience and disappointment about this on their Facebook page with ZERO response.

It wouldn't hurt at this point to call Ford's 1-800 customer service number and politely, yet firmly, file a complaint.

I'm not sure what the previous TSB's didn't fix but apparently you have an idea. Care to share with us?

I'm 15K miles post warranty now and no issues what so ever. But, I warned my wife that if my truck were to present any of the classic signs of internal engines issues, it's outta here. To me it's just not worth the money, it's only a machine that they build seven days a week. I'm not that emotionally invested in it anymore.

I think hes asking if replacing the chain and phasers permanently fixed the start up rattle, or if it returned later in life.

The answer to that question is somewhat unknown, to me. Nobody I've talked to or known has put enough miles on the engine after having it fixed to know whether it I fixed for good. That is to say, the problem takes 70k miles to show up the first time, and nobody has put another 70k on it since the fix.

Sorry guys, yes, it is for the 3.5L EcoBoost engines produced between 2011 and May 2015. There is a cronic problem for some engines to devlope a "rattle" upon start up after sitting for a period of time overnight, it occurs when the oil is near needing replacement and cold temps. The timing chain stretches, in most cases I have seen up to 3/4" and the tensioners can't pick up that much slack. After a few seconds it goes away as oil pressure returns and the tensioners pick up the slack, eventually, there is enough slack and you loose power or your engine enters a safe mode and or throws a code.

Ford put out from what I have read one or possibly two prior TSB's to address the problem, but they failed immediately.

Thanks meborder, that is what I am afraid of. I don't want to dump $3,000 into this truck if it is not going to fix it. I notice it happens when the life of the oil is under 25% and/or the temp is 40 degrees or colder over night or while I am at work. I may just monitor this issue over the next six months to a year as I am not seeing any loss of power or performance at this time.

Don't wait to fix this. If let go, you run the risk of grenading the engine. Either fix it now, or trade it in. I recommend trading it in on a nice warm day after 45 minutes of driving!

It's well known that cam phasers and timing chains don't like dirty oil as evidenced by all the issues that came from the 5.4L engines. Change the oil at 5K intervals or 50% oil life remaining.

tseekins, changed the oil last night with Full synthetic Mobil 1 and a platinum Wix filter, no rattle this morning. I am just going to go back to changing every 3,000 miles regardless, it has always served me well.

I am going to see what the dealers offer me and take my time and not rush into a decision, as well as see what support I can get from the 3 different Ford dealers in town for a full blown repair.

I appreciate the feedback and comments, I will let you know how it goes

I believe when Ford originally came out with a fix, the cam phasers were not included in it and only the timing chain was replaced. Once they realized what was causing the issue, the cam phasers were included. Also, part of the problem was lengthy oil change intervals by customers. Every 5k miles is optimal. Some were running 10k miles.

What is more troubling is that it was using the Ford recommended oil change interval. Again, another Ford screw up on the 3.5 ecoboost.
Ironically, this is STILL happening on new 3.5 ecoboosts. The 2017 Raptor community is up in arms over the ecoboost plague.

FordRaptorForum.com. They have the engine rattles and condensate buildup in the intercooler. Most over there have been in the shop.
