Today I pulled off the drums and started inspecting the hardware.

I discovered the cable inside the passenger side drum was cut which suggests that my parking brake is the culprit.. pictured below is the broken cable..

Could someone give me the bad news? Is this a short cable that attaches to the spring where the longer external cable attaches to? Is is perhaps a job where I should replace all of the brake cables?

Thank you inadvance!

Busted!
Easy to replace, you need something like a 10mm right above the brake piston on the back side of the backingplate. Take that nut off and Tap the long screw out from that side or gently pry the stack of parts held on from the outside.

Replace that cable, ensuring to hook it onto the brake adjuster claw correctly, and grease the friction points in that stack of parts with a moly assembly lube like M-77 paste to keep the parking/Ebrake moving freely.

I had to tap the screw back through those parts using a deep socet because its somewhat a friction fit.

Loctite the nut on the back of the backing plate and you are ready to put the drum back on, but it sounds like you need to replace or rebuild the piston while you are in there. (hint: if you get the motorcraft pistons they are really nice and made in Italy instead of China!)

Good luck, let me know if you have any questions or need refrence photos!
