10W-30 vs 15W-40 Motorcraft Diesel oil

I just changed oil at 4000 miles, 2000 mile towing a 14,000 lb 5th wheel in Florida. I wanted to get out any break in wear metals.

Oil cap states to use 10W-30 for normal driving or 5W-40 for severe duty. I read the new blurb from Ford about only using spec WSS-M2C171-F1. I couldn't find 5W-40 Motorcraft Synthetic Diesel locally but Walmart had 10W-30 and 15W-40 Motorcraft diesel oil. I bought the 15W-40 and changed it this afternoon.

The owners manual seems to allow 15W-40 in my hot climate. Is there any negatives to use the 15W-40?

Does anyone have a source and reasonable price for 5W-40 Motorcraft Diesel Synthetic?

I had same issue - couldn't find the spec in anything but 15w40 (and I've used it in my 2004 6.0L)....so i bought it. I figure (living in texas and having a heavy foot) I could benefit from the Higher Temp/Climate range.

Your local Ford Dealer parts dept should have the 5w40, but be prepared to pay big $$ for it.

Amazon sells it for $49 for a 5 quart jug.

My local dealer where I bought my truck sells me the 5 quart jugs of 5W-40 full synthetic Motorcraft oil for $25 per jug. They give me the service department price since I've agreed to buy all my fluids and filters through them. The parts guy also gives me 20% off MSRP on all other Ford brand accessories I buy through them.

That's good for you. Dealers around here don't give you squat without a resale liscense.

Is that South Carolina or Southern California you live? It'd be nice to know so I can check that off my list of places to never visit or live since the vehicle dealers there are dicks.

Thanks for that lead. Amazon Prime has a 3 pack of 1 gallon containers of Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme Synthetic 5W-40 oil for $56.15 delivered. I just ordered enough for my next 2 oil changes. They have a 1-2 month shipping date. I'm not in a rush since I just changed my oil.

Your right, it's on the approved list https://www.fcsdchemicalsandlubrican...SSM2C171F1.pdf

I've always trusted Valvoline products.

Oil choices

I had read that Ford recommends 5w-40 or 15w-40 for use with Bio diesel fuel, which is about all that is available anymore

Why 5w40? Most of you all are in warm weather climates where it never gets cold. I use to run 0w40 as I believe it would help in the -40 temperature starts.

Is the first number not just the temperature viscosity and does not really matter too much for warm weather?

5W40 is also synthetic that will have less coking at higher temps such as in your turbo.

I'll be operating my truck in temperatures as low as -55 in the winter. And towing lots in the summer. 5W-40 all the way.
