Please dont tell me. Tranny issues?

Ive got a 93 f150 4.9l. After hauling some heavy loads shifting got rough. I checked the trans fluid and the dipstick was compley dry so i added about 3/4 of a quart and i think its still low. Now the trans really slips in low gears at about 40 mph is slips completly. Should i remove some fluid to try to get it to shift alright. If i add to the proper level should the slipping go away? I don't understand why its shifting worse now that the fluid is closer to the proper level. Btw it has 215000 miles

I'm confused. You had no fluid on the dipstick so you added fluid but aren't sure if it's still low? Did you lose the dipstick to recheck the level? How would removing fluid make it shift better? The fluid applies the clutches and drives the the torque converter so proper level is important for operation. Where did the fluid go should be another problem to solve.

First off, quit driving your truck until you find out what is wrong. A slipping transmission will self-destruct quickly.

You are checking the level when warm, engine running and trans in park, right?

You need to stop driving that truck and find out what's happening. As you have already been told by Fords4Me, use the proper method to check the level, and consider the real reading whichever is lowest on both sides of the dipstick as that's the level were the dipstick was actually submerged.

Yes i was checking it while ideling in park on a flat surface. When cold i had fluid on both sides at the top of the cross hatch. I checked it again hot and again one side was dry one side was covered in fluid 3 inches up. It was shifting through all gears when the dipstick was completly dry although 1st and second shifted hard. After adding fluid it went to neutral when shifting to 3rd.
I used some 1/4 in pex tubing like a straw down the fill tube (i didnt get any in my mouth) to remove a pint. Now it shifts perfectly fine although one side of the dipstick is dry and one side is fine. Im going to leave it and hope this truck will last 300,000 miles without major issues

I don't see that happening since you haven't fixed the transmission issue.

Check for a hole or Crack in the tube going to the coolant reservoir.
