Interior lights

Hi all. My 2004 Navigator the interior light is no coming on when I click the unlock button on the remote neither when I open the doors initially. Once I put the key in the ignition and open the switch the lights come on. I get the door ajar when somebody opens a door. Another strange thing a noticed if I locked it and immediately try they work. After several minutes I unlock or open a door the lights don't come on. It could be a programming thing?

Sounds like a relay built into the security module is not working properly.

Where's the security module in this truck? I know I'll have to open it.

No I don't see how it can be repaired in the vehicle. To take it out first try removing the glove box and you should get a whole lot more room to work.

Thank you. I know it can't be repaired inside the car. The question is it could be open to change the relay inside? I managed to remove the glove box and it's small room behind the dash. It's held with two 10 or 12mm screws.

Ok let me see if can explain this better. The doors unlock fine with my aftermarket alarm. I open the door and the interior lights do not come on. if I try to drive the car the steering wheel is very hard and the park assist does not work. The seats do not move or anything until couple of minutes. I would like to know if I have a bad VSM on my Navigator and what's the part number. The Dealer in my area is looking for $350 for that part and obviously plus the programming. My question is can I get this part used and have reprogrammed. Are there any companies that would fix these modules and return it back to us? Any help is greatly appreciated.

So this seems to be quite a few problems. The security module does not control all of these, such as park assist, seats and steering.

You need to get it scanned with a good dealer level scantool, or at the very least a good bluetooth OBD2 scanner with FORScan to see if there's any trouble codes and check the operation of the affected systems. A good bluetooth scanner could be the OBDLink MX but if you don't know much about this then you're better off getting someone to check it for you.

Now, I'm more confused. my auto headlamps are not turning on and my memory seat is not working. Can anyone tell me what module and part number do I need to replace to take care of all these issues at once and if I need to reprogram it at the dealer?

Auto headlamps are controlled by the VSM, vehicle security module. The seat memory is controlled by the DSM, Driver seat module. Nobody here can tell you what to replace based on the limited information provided, it would be guesswork at best. Throwing parts at it will likely just empty your wallet and it might not even fix the problem.

What you need to do is to properly diagnose and troubleshoot the problem. The first and most basic step which is quite simple to do, is to connect a scantool to the OBD port and read out any trouble codes that might be on the system. This may not pinpoint the problem, but it will at least give a starting point on what to do next.
