So I started changing the plugs on my 2003 F-350 6.8L/4R100 this afternoon.

One of the tabs on the electrical plug that connects to the COP (on cyl #8) broke right off.

Dealer wants $68 for a new one!!!! Dealer states that the new plug has a 4" pigtail with butt connectors.

Since this is the first one that broke, and I'm only into the third plug, this can get expensive!!!

I've been VERY careful and not wiggling the connector....Pressing tab with finger or flat head screwdriver and pulling straight out.

1. What is done to fix this issue?
2. Do you replace with dealer part, cutting wire to loom and then using butt connector as dealer parts counter suggested?
3. Aftermarket part?


Bummed that this had stopped my work on plugs that I was hoping to finish tomorrow AM

There are sets of 8 on ebay for less than $25.Looks like a common problem.

 

Rock Auto has them starting at $7.75.
Any big name auto parts store should carry Dorman brand. Part # is Dorman 645570. If they don't have it in stock most stores can get it overnight or hotshot it from another store. This is a very common part, used on Fords for a couple of decades, any parts store should stock it in at least one of various brands. While you are shopping, you might want to check the availability of the injector connector for the same reason.

Hint: the clip just holds the connector onto the coil. A broken clip will not keep the coil from firing. It will usually stay on there well enough to get you to the parts store as long as the road isn't too bumpy. Some people have been known to rig up a nylon zippy tie to hold the connector onto the coil until next payday.

I am a purist and when repairing a car want no song-and-dance and/or comebacks. I use only OEM parts unless a vendor part is known superior or doing HI-PO work.

I am the wrong guy to answer that question...
