20" Factory PVD Wheels Chipping/Peeling

Just replaced the original tires on my 2015 F150 Lariat and when I picked up the truck at the local tire dealer noticed the chrome around the outer rim had significantly chipped/peeled away. Anyone have any experience with this issue? Could it be a defect in the manufacturing? Truck is still under warranty and I've taken it back to the dealer. Tire dealer said they noticed it coming off as soon as they broke the seal on the old tires and prior to removing them along with difficulty in getting new tires(same as originals)to seal.

Unfortunately this is a well-known issue. Sometimes Ford replaces them, sometimes they don't. That said, even if they do replace them, it's with the same wheels. No word on any improvement in the PVD process.

I have a couple rock chips in my wheels. Seemed kinda weird to me, but then again, I haul *** down gravel roads.

Yep, me too! LOL
The polished aluminum rims on mine seem to hold up or hide imperfections pretty well.

I appreciate the information. When I say chipping/peeling I'm not just referring to an outer clear coat coming off. The chrome comes off and leaves just the black base underneath. The dealer took pictures and submitted to Ford, hopefully they step up and take responsibility. I've not been overly impressed with the warranty process on issues I've had with my '11 F250 CC Lariat, maybe they will surprise me.

My sister-in-law had the same problem with her Murano. The dealer told her it was from getting wheel cleaner at the car wash. I'm kind of picky so I wash my mine hand and only use non-acid wheel cleaner.

I have almost 39K on my 2015 XLT with the chrome PVD wheels. Sad to say I have only hand washed mine once since I got it. Been thru numerous car washes. I have no issues with my wheels at all. I would have to say there is an underlying issues with your wheels.

UPDATE. I have been pleasantly surprised, my dealer received a reply back from FORD within 18 hours to replace all 4 wheels under warranty. The truck is at the dealer today having the wheels replaced.

Good deal - from what I've seen you've got about a 50/50 shot of getting new wheels when reporting this issue.

That said, are they going to replace with the same wheels? If so, won't you have this issue again? Or did they change the PVD process?

This is an interesting topic....I have 18" factory wheels with that same coating....I actually burnt through it with the mothers sponge power ball!! ..... it's not chrome it's like a chrome colored powder coat....definetly not durable in my opinion.....so I actually shopped around and found these........18" take offs and put my nitto terra grapplers on them. 295/70/18

I've noticed a chip in the bezel around my infotainment system. I posted pictures in another thread. I wonder if it's really cheap material.

Jafo56, Thats why you aren't supposed to polish them. They are not "chrome" or aluminium wheels. Actually if you clean them well and just use car wax on them they hold up quite well and the break dust just rinses off.

I like the way those wheels look on your truck. Looks better than the chrome.

Just wash with the car wash soap, then spray wax after drying.

TJReams I did use mother car wax only on them with the mothers sponge power ball ...it was the power ball that took the coating right off the wheel.....they shouldn't even use the word chrome in the wheel description!! Lol.......I have chrome weld racing wheels on my superduty since 2006....... they still look brand new.......
