a lil help with my 1990150 Lariat

Ok so guys I have a 1990 Ford F-150 XLT Lariat it has the 4.9 liter straight 6 I'm not sure what the transmission is I know it's a standard 5 speed but I'm not sure on exactly what the transmission it has if any if you have a way for me to find that out that would be amazing. Having said that I'm replacing the clutch right now but then I'm looking to increase power and torque and towing ability I was also wondering if anybody had any ideas on how I should go about that thanks for any help guys

Assuming the drive train is relatively healthy, a thorough tune up with quality parts. Keep up with regular maintenance. Stick with short tires. Don't do anything that makes the truck heavier, or increases wind resistance. Do not waste money on any bolt one power adders. Have realistic expectations.

Look into your rear end gearing. You are likely running a gear ratio favoring economy over torque. If so, a re-gear is likely your best bang for buck.

That would be the Mazda M5.

There isn't much you can do about the first two but gears make a big difference in towing ability. 3.55 would be what I suggest for a good compromize between power and economy with your powertrain and stock tires or something close, if you truck is typical it has 3.08 gears now and that would be a healthy upgrade. To find out what you truck has now find the axle code on the drivers door pillar and post it up, that will decode to show the ratio.

Now the easiest and quickest way to get a different axle ratio is to swap in a complete axle from a wreck, any F150 from 1987-1996 would make a good donor, and it doesn't matter if the truck is 2wd or 4wd the rear end is the same as yours.

What is the trans code on the driver's "B" pillar? Code M is for the Mazda M5OD-R2.

The block that says TRANS has a code of "M" under it so it would be the Mazda M5OD-R2 transmission.
