HOW TO: Change clutch master cylinder pushrod
If you want to change a pushrod and jot the entire cylinder such as I did to get an adjustable one (15$ at napa) here's how to do it. If you pull the rod out you will break the clips inside that hold the rod in place.
Pull the master cylinder, leave it attached to the line. I found a small hard plastic tube and sliced it in half with a cutting disc. Place the two halves around the pushrod and vice grips to hold them together, not too tight.
Hold the master with the rod pointing up and hook the master under the fender or something so you can pull up on the rod and down on the vice grips at the same time. Rotate the vice grips and rod, one with each hand while pulling up on the rod (master against the fender). Soon it will click out. The new rod clicks in.
Here's pictures.

I like the plastic idea. I found myself doing this replacement earlier and was attempting to use some kind of shim for the same effect.
Ultimately I ended up removing the c-clip that holds in the piece with the plastic clips in the master cylinder, and removed that from the master. Pushed holder back on the rod a bit to expose the end that fits into the clips and cut off the end since the rod was already broken.
