Question of the Week: Do you think that Ford will put a diesel in the new Bronco?
When we asked what engines you would like to see in the 2020 Bronco, a great many people listed a diesel.
For the latest Question of the Week, we want to know if you think that Ford will include a diesel engine option for the upcoming Bronco.
Mind you, this isnt whether or not you would like to see a new diesel Bronco - it is whether or not you think that Ford will offer a diesel Bronco.

i don't believe they will for the same reasons they don't put one in the Escape or Expolder. I just don't think the sales volume will be there for the type of buyers the Bronco will have. Would I like to see that option sure. But i don't think it will happen unless Ford can find other SUV's or automobiles to use the engine in.

The argument for diesel is quickly diminishing as tighter emissions regulations are implemented. Perhaps 10 years ago, diesel v. gas made more sense, but today, no longer. The high cost of NOx reduction has eliminated the diesel advantage, which was mainly torque and fuel economy. Technology in gasoline engines has yielded impressive hp and torque gains in smaller displacement powerplants, and engine longevity is drastically better while maintaining cheaper and fewer maintenance requirements.

I'm torn, I think they might, but won't be surprised if they don't. Everywhere else in the world the Everest (which will he our Bronco) has the 3.2L I5 DuraTorq turbo diesel, which the full size Transit has here. So they might do it. However, with VW and FCA messing with diesel emissions, it's getting harder for them to get made. I don't hear many issues anymore on new emission diesels, and they all now have common failure points. I mean outside of the DEF heater going out, occasional DPF issue, there hasn't been much. DEF is a bit of an added cost, but it's done every few thousand miles, so it's not that big of a deal. 12qt capacity is a bit high, but nothing too bad. If I could, I'd buy a diesel version when released.
