Sluggish truck when towing TT

Well I went on a short camping trip down to Hocking Hills in southern Ohio this weekend and was a little disappointed on how the truck performed.

All stock 96 with 145,000 miles on it. I have shimmed the FPR spring, that is about the only performance increase if you call it that, more of a bandaid. My truck is a 5spd with 4.10 rear.

Issue I had is that I feel as though the truck has nothing in 4th and 5th gear. My TT probably weighs at most 6,000 lbs. just gutless on flat ground in thos two gears and even in the mid to high rpm range. Feels as though after half throttle there is nothing more. I had it mashed to the floor and could barely get it to 65 mph on flat ground. Had a slight head wind but not something to hold the truck back like that I wouldn't think. Also when pulling some of the steep grades getting to the camp ground I had to constantly grab gears and was down to 2nd running 2,800+ rpm and feeling as though I was still loosing speed.

My buddy was behind me and said my truck was blowing some black smoke, not sure how much "some" was. Didn't think that sounded right so I have looked for boost leaks and intake restrictions and haven't found any. Appears to be no signs of soot anywhere around the turbo and up pipes. I tightened down the plenum boots. Going to order new ones today as I have the original orange ones. Turbo seems to be spooling up.

Wondering if my fuel pump is failing since it seems I have nothing more past 1/2 throttle or so.

A hiking photo for your enjoyment.

If you have black smoke you have a boost leak or an up pipe leak. Check the MAP sensor line going to the spider and make sure it doesn't have cracks. Unplug your MAP sensor and drive it around if it gets its power back that means your MAP sensor is bad.

Mine was like that last year.

Do you have a boost gauge? is it making boost?

What is your fuel pressure? at idle and in 3rd WOT?
I don't like the BB mod, my spring bent from it and had less pressure and bought an upgrade spring after. Link in this thread

Does the exhaust sound loud? my EBPV was closing even when disconnected. a coat hanger wrapped around the stop tang to the engine hoist eye made mine stay closed and made a difference in power.

I listed all I did so far in this thread

Just how big and heavy is this TT anyway? These trucks stock are pretty guttless.

He said "6000 lbs at most.
When mine was stock, it was a real dog with a camper hooked to it

mine is stock and even with a stuck EBPV it towed OK. I look forward to the next tow with it wired open.

How many miles on it?
what is fuel pressure at WOT in third?
oil level?

Yea and a 6000lb camper vs 6000lb load on a flat dek trailer is way different also.

Truck has 145,000 miles on it. Last time I checked fuel pressure was at a garage and it would dip down to 15-20 psi I believe running it up to 2,500 rpms. I know having TT back there is like a big wind sail but last year I towed it 250 miles one way to Michigan City Indiana and didn't have any problem getting her up to 70 mph on the interstate. Basically once out of third gear she doesn't feel like she will go any more.

I put a new MAP hose line on today. Didn't get a chance to drive it yet. Also going to order some Plenum boots from Riff Raff. There are not any signs of exhaust leak on any of the connections. I wouldn't be surprised if one or both of the original plenum boots is leaking boost pressure.

Anything else to check for? Oil level is fine, I never get below a quart low. Current oil has 3,000 miles on it.

Doubt my TT is more than 6,000. It's dry weight is 4,650.

Yes I am pretty sure the gauge was bouncing down to that low when reving the engine up. That is when I did the "BB" mod. Wondering if that didn't help the situation much since it doesn't seem like I have anything more after half throttle. I will try and get a new reading on the fuel pressure this week, I always wanted a reason for adding e-fuel, always comes at a time when you don't have the funds. Currently going to order a new SMF and clutch kit as my stock dual mass has about 7/8" of play in it and seems to be causing the vibration in my floor that I can feel when driving.

I haven't had a chance to check it since I have done the mod. I will try to this weekend.

Where are you located? Hocking hills is only about an 1.5 south of me.

It sure sounds like you're having a fuel problem. If the funds aren't available for e fuel, at least look at getting a new mechanical pump. Is it weeping fuel?
