Will spare tire carrier allow a 31 inch spare?

I have a 1992 F150 4x4 and it was produced early in the 1992 model year before the factory offered 265/75 x 15 or 31 inch tall tires. My 92 was factory equipped with 235/75 x 15 tires.

Will the spare tire carrier underneath the bed allow a 31 inch tall tire? Will the bolts be long enough for the wider 31 inch tire?

The only way i have been able to fit my 265/75/R16 spare in the carrier is by airing it down to about 15-20 psi (which is way too low for me). And even then the side walls of the tire are getting pulled in so tight that the carrier is practically cutting into the tire.

Since I don't really consider this as fitting properly I suggest longer bolts, switching to a stock size spare, or do what I do and just throw it in the bed.

I would think it would. Diff between the factory sizes is about an inch. Look at your current spare and see if you have that much to spare. Might also be some adjustment in the bolts holding the spare carrier.

No I don't think it will.. I couldn't get a 265/75R15 into the carrier on my '90 so I didn't even bother trying to fit a 31" in there which is slightly wider again. But if you can find a carrier from an F250/350 those tires will fit.

Number Dummy would have the definitive answer, but I thought the F-150/250/350 all used the same carrier. I know that I had no trouble fitting a 235/85-16 tire in the carrier in my '95 F-150. That's 31.7" tall but only 235 mm (9.25") wide rather than the 265mm (10.4") width the OP is asking about.

Still, from my experience the carrier will work fine with a 31" tire, but based on Fastback460's feedback longer bolts might be needed.

Yes, A 31 10.50 will fit in the factory carrier. The bolt opposite of the J bolt has to be loosened some. I have one under my truck.

I've got a 235/85R16 sitting in my spare carrier and it fits just fine. That comes out to about 31.7" tall and about 9.3" wide.

Not sure if anything has been done to the carrier or the bolts, though.

Crank the eye bolt on the carrier out some, get some all thread and cut it for the pivot bolt/rod. I have a 285/75r16 (33x11.5r16) in the stock carrier on my f250 with no issues. I believe a 34-35 could be used too.

That may have been the problem with mine. I couldn't loosen the bolts since they were rusted in place and would not budge. So I ultimately just cut them off since the hanger was in my way when I changed my rear tank a few years ago. I had every intention of replacing them with longer bolts, but still haven't done it yet.

We had a 95' F150 shop truck when I was younger that had a 265/75R15 in the carrier. That was the spec'd tire size on that truck best I can recall (non tow package or handling package).
