Hey guys, I have an early 99 7.3 that is slow to start but then runs well. My hpop pressure is right at 600 at idle and climbs as high as 3000 in acceleration. After the engine reaches operating temperature, the pressure will drop to well below 500 when clutching at stop and then will only start with an either shot (if it starts at all). Also, while driving, it is very sluggish on acceleration but I can release the throttle very quickly and allow the pressure to shoot back up and it runs like a stiped as..d ape as long as I keep my foot in it. I have checked my fuel pressure and am good there (80). I have also replaced the throttle position sensor and the fuel pressure regulator on the return side on the filter housing. I'm guessing it's a
pressure leak issue but don't know where to look first. Thanks
sounds like possibly a GP issue (GPR maybe) however there are a few things that can be done that will give you good option to test with...first off installing a GPR mod (LED light that will turn on when the Glow Plugs are energized) will tell you if/when the Glow plugs are on
the IPR is something I would defiantly check!
second "mod" if you will is Torque Pro and OBDLink MX, I would also recommend reading over the FAQ posted in my signature, getting certain pieces of INFO from Torque pro will really help us help you out with your issue!!
Also, please do not start your truck with ether any longer, unless you have disabled the glow plugs first. Ether and hot glow plugs could lead you to a nice new 10,000 piece engine jigsaw puzzle....
oh and as Rickster stated please for the love of the 7.3 stop using starter fluids, or at least disable the glow plugs first!!! that is a big no no (there should even be a tag warning against ether shots with glow plugs on), now if you really don't mind the risk and possible $10k engine swap then its up to you....you have been warned!!!
Well, Gentlemen, of course I disabled the glo plugs before a very light shot of ether to get the thing back to the shop. ( I am an engine builder by trade just not much experience locating which of the 873 reasons a 7.3 quits running.) Oh and by the way, I just a couple of months ago rebuilt a 96 7.3 that runs like a sewing machine. I have learned in my 56 years that the lowest wino bum on the street corner knows SOMETHING you don't know so I like to consult "experts" rather than throw money at problems. Will replace the IPR next. Thanks for the help and I would welcome any other suggestions that might help.
Don't replace the IPR, measure the coil resistance, check that tin nut on the back first before throwing money at it. Apparently the coil is what typically fails.
Well it's certainly a relief you disable the GPR, do you have any type of scanning tools for the truck? If not I suggest Torque pro and the obd link mx as a good start should get us numbers that should give us a better insight as to what's ailing the truck
