01 5.4L 2v wont start but loud gun effect from starter

my truck has been sitting awhile due to me being old and broken. have been trying to start it when it makes the machine gun noise. Tried to tap it with a dead blow to knock it out to no avail......

A "machine gun noise"? I've never heard of such a description for a starter. I've heard grinding, squealing, and clicking but have no idea what a machine gun noise would be.

Does that vehicle have a starter relay on the fender?
I can see how low voltage to the relay could cause it to click, chatter, or sound like a machine gun.
Some people consider the starter relay to be "the starter".

Check your voltage, and also if the flywheel has broken teeth.

I'm going to assume that this is the starter relay making the rapid clicking noise? Bad battery cable or connection(s). Check the battery. Try a jump start.
