Picking the right truck.

Alright so I'm looking for a good towing/all around good use truck.
I'll be moving from VA to FL and would like to get a big enough truck to haul my own belonging on a trailer even if it takes a couple of trips.
My biggest dilemma is picking between gas or diesel. I know to stay away from the 6.0 diesels and rather not take any chances with a 5.4 triton.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should be looking for? I'm leaning diesel just because i can get one for around the same price used as a gasoline engine. but I really don't care so long as it can get the job done.

depends I guess in this case on two things.

What type of trailer if any are you going to use.

secondly is what is the intended purpose once in Florida.

I am thinking so far....a F250 with the 6.2 and 4.30 gears or the 6.7 diesel would be up your alley.

Both in long bed flavor of course.

Based on this info, I'd say a Uhaul truck and maybe a Uhaul utility trailer....unless you have use for a full size pickup in Florida.

Once im there I plan on using it to tow my vehicle to and from the track. which its not gonna see a whole lot of action but maybe twice a month or something like that. Also as a hauling truck fishing hunting etc...

I plan on getting a enclosed trailer for tall furniture and may have to tow a car.

Are you really finding used gas and diesel trucks with similar equipment, miles and age for around the same price? That doesn't seem to be the typical trend.

Yeah there are plenty that have similar miles and are about the same. you're always gonna pay more for a diesel but it's not much of a difference if there's one at all.

now of course there's a lot that have huge differences in prices like I initially thought there would be.

If me after owning a diesel (86 GM 6.2) & gas (02 5.9 Dodge) motor SUV's to pull my race car and trailer I would go diesel in a hart beat!

You will get better fuel mileage with the diesel all be it a little more $ pre gallon than gas.

It will run a lot longer before any major work if any is needed.
230k on diesel and only did 1 pump rebuild, was showing signs it needed it again.
I added a Gail Banks turbo kit @ 100K on the diesel was like a gas motor after that.
180K on gas had to replace heads as it had a miss and found they cracked, never over heated.

Diesel motor is a work horse put a load on it and let it do it's work.

I'd opt for a late model F250 with the 6.2 and 4.30 gears for your use. I think it would serve you better based upon your use.

I've got an 87 F250 SC, 460, carb., C-6, 4.10 gears that I use to haul vehicles back and forth from NY to VA. When truck is loaded and a car on the trailer, I get around 8 mpg. The gearing and engine size does help on the hills.

I know in Ohio

a 2011 to 2016 F 250.. 6.2L Gas or 6.7L Diesel has a difference of 6,000 dollars.. with the packages being the same.

as a NEW truck with a diesel is 9-10K up charge .. just for the Diesel .. so they should not be the same used.

We bought our F150 for the sole purpose of towing our enclosed car trailer. We run in about 7-8 race events a year all over the Midwest and needed something reliable and that would tow with ease. MPG was not a major concern, as towing 8K will consume some petrol period. Last year, after the 150 was pretty well broke in, we avg'd about 10.5-11 mpg towing, very acceptable. When not towing the wife uses the 150 during the winter, as her mustang goes into hibernation in late Oct. She'll avg about 15 mpg city and around 24-25 mpg highway, cruising at 67-68 mph. We're very pleased with the 150 as its meeting all our needs and has exceeded our expectations.

i highly recommend V10. It will not disappoint. My V10 is in a full size econoline van (very rare- hard to find). It pulls my 24' enclosed trailer very well. When the trailer is empty you can't even tell it's there. (3500lbs). With my race car (2950lbs) in it (totaling nearly 7,000lbs) you can tell it is working, but definitely not overworked.

And before you talk about fuel mileage- I get 13 when I stay at/below 65mph on the highway. Some of the F series guys say they get even better mileage.

Those are also brand new trucks if you look at older trucks like I was doing you can get a 6.0 and 6.4 for about the same as a gas model.

now 7.3's are more expensive sometimes even more then the 6.0's and 6.4's
