I have a 1990 ford f250 XLT lariat with a 5.8 L engine. I notice a loud clicking noise near the front of the engine on the right side near the battery. I think it is coming from the smog air pump just beneath the alternator, but am not a 100% certain. I was wondering how difficult it would be to replace the air pump myself. thankz anyone.

 

Very easy to replace. Only have to remove three bolts for the pulley, a couple mounting bolts and two or three hose connections. Half hour tops.

Plenty of people on here, myself included just remove the smog pump all together. There are a couple of ways to go about it.

 

Removing and not replacing with another is not an option depending on where the OP lives because of emissions testing.
