New to me 2001 f250 with the v10

Good morning all! I just sold my 1995 f250 with the 7.3 and I ended up buying my friends 2001 f250 with the v10. Anyways, I love the truck so far, it feels even more powerful than my old diesel. But I have some questions about it. What should I be doing for preventive maintenance on the v10 to get optimal fuel economy and horsepower? It already has a k&n air intake (a waste imho), and I cleaned the maf. What else should I do? She has about 184,000. Should I add an aftermarket tranny cooler since it is a plow truck?

Beautiful truck!!!

I think the factory transmission cooler is pretty substantial... but if you were concerned then you could add a second cooler....but, I would put a thermostat on it and an electric fan. If it's heating up too much with the factory cooler than the fan would be a great asset.

As far as MPG. Drive slower. Mods don't really help. Expect 8-13 mpg depending on your driving style.

Thanks

thank you! This lariat is georgous, just needs a new bed. Ive been getting around 11.2-12.4, which is fine by me, still better than a diesel...imho.

I'd get rid of the K&N and put a stock paper filter in it. Every time I see a dirty intake tract there's a K&N filter in place.

I've tested and seen dyno tests of K&N filters and no changes, tho a complete K&N intake system might give some power over stock, no clue there.

By "factory transmission cooler" do you mean the radiator tank cooler.
The truck probably already has an aux cooler in front of the radiator.
A common upgrade is to replace the aux cooler with the 2003 5R110 cooler which bolts in.
It has 1/2" tubing so hose adapters are required.
The 1/2" tubing reduces line pressure so there is no problem with the cooler bypass circuit.
I have the Dorman 918-216 (Amazon) equivalent on our Ex and it works great.

On my 01 F350 and V-10....I put the 6.0 cooler in and added 4:30 gears....and a 5Star tuner.....but I was pulling a 36' 5th wheel............alos changed my plugs every year. Had 153,000 when I sold it.

nice truck

The trick with K&N's is - let them get dirty and don't clean them - the dirt will filter more dirt. I've used K&N's in a few vehicles. Never had a problem with dirt in the intake. If there is, it's not oiled enough.

Let sleeping dogs lie.

Hey Collision when did this happen? You sold the obs for a Gasser now that's crazy talk lol... anyway you will find that there engines are pretty much bullet proof, the 6.0 transmission cooler is a great MOD regardless if your towing or not. Get rid of the K&N and install the stock paper filter,do the Zoodad and Gotta MOD, replace the necked down exhaust Y pipe for an SPD Y pipe. As for maintenance replace all fluids and spark plugs MC only(note be sure to torque the spark plugs right if not you'll be one of those with spark plug blow outs)
And as for MPG well your pretty much stuck with what your doing now.

I had a question about your user name, answered.

That sucks man, sorry. It could be worse, looks like it won't be too big of a repair.

Collision is only one letter different than my last name. It looks like Ill just need a new windshield, door, fender and headlight, possibly where the headlight mounts to. I was driving on a back road, gravel, deer jumped out, i swerved and side swiped a bunch of trees. I just got a concussion, nothing broken.

Wow. Hope you don't suffer any lasting issues from the concussion, and glad it wasn't worse.

As you can see, pretty well mangled. So im using this unfortunate event and trying to turn it positive. Im getting the new style mirrors for my truck, which is great lol
