Freeze Plug Above Starter

I need to replace the freeze plug that is above the starter and have heard that a standard cup style plug will work for this hole. Is this true for the 6.9? I'd rather not buy the special tool for a single freeze plug and I know how to set the cup style plugs.
Thanks

If you're talking about the block heater location then that won't fit the special IDI freeze plugs. Why not just put a block heater back in?

In any event, I used a rubber expansion plug (1.5" maybe?) when my block heater failed, until I got a replacement. I don't see why a regular freeze plug wouldn't work.

I don't need a block heater but may put one in. Would prefer the freeze plug for simplicity.

If I ever had a freeze plug problem, I would just put in a new block heater. I live in Los Angeles, but you never know when a block heater would come in handy on a trip north or to the mountains.

Around here they block the passes when it gets that cold. Our cold nights at 20 degrees here so it should be good. If not then I'll be draining coolant and adding a block heater in December.

If you are possibly going to drain the block in December to maybe add a Block Heater.
There goes your simplicity....Just saying.

No more work to add the Block Heater or Freeze Plug.
Seems like I read you have to remove the Starter to get to that Plug.
For simplicity.....
