Brake lights good...turn signal not?
Hey guys. I've got a '69 Ranger that's a driver. The other day at the drive through a small amount of smoke billowed from my steering column and my lights went a bit wonky. Brake lights would work, but passenger rear turn signal wouldn't. I figured the turn signal switch fried a bit. I changed it out and I have the exact same symptoms. Here they are:
I have to rule out the TSS because the symptoms are the same before and after I installed a new one.
I dread the pouring over of wiring schematics....but I know it's inevitable. I'm hoping somebody had their light bulb light up after reading this, though. I point in the right direction is always appreciated.
- Both brake lights work
- Right rear signal does not, but all the rest do (front and back)
- Left turn signal works, front and back.
- If I hit the hazard switch in the glove box and put the turn lever to the left, the hazards work.
- If I hit the hazard switch in the glove box and put the turn lever to the right, the hazards work except for the right rear.
I have to rule out the TSS because the symptoms are the same before and after I installed a new one.

Have you tried a new signal flasher? I know it sounds silly but I've had them bad when they would work one side and not the other
Also I would check with a test light on both sides of the connector below the column. If you put in a new tss, you must have had all the wires out of the connector to get them through the steering column. Some years of switch look exactly the same but have a couple of the wires in different positions.

I kept thinking a connector or the flasher, but then I would think....the flasher works on the left, so it can't be that. With your comment about having a flasher work on side but not another really gets me thinking that must be it. I was going to change the connectors to a 9 pin molex so for the time being I was plugging the pins from the TSS straight into the female side connectors. I did check those and worked them a few times.
I'm going to change that flasher tonight and report back to you. Thanks for the insight

So with a test light you have nothing coming out of the turn signal switch to the corresponding malfunctioning bulb?
Also, if it can flash just one bulb, like front or rear, you have the wrong flasher, probably for 4 way. They work but you never know when you have a burned out bulb. The correct flasher will not operate a single bulb and the remaining bulb and turn indicator just stay on, not flashing.

The only difference between the T/S and 4 way Heavy Duty flasher is: The H/D flasher has a louder CLICK
The H/D flasher was used as the T/S flasher on Camper/Trailer Specials and cars/trucks with a tow package. Dealers also installed it for the T/S for people that were deaf.
So, you can use the H/D flasher in lieu of the T/S flasher, but you should not use the T/S flasher in lieu of the H/D flasher for the 4 ways.
