Budget Tuners

I have a question for you guys. I have a buddy with a 09 F250 that is looking at having his DPF and EGR fall off on a very bumpy road in the near future. He has been looking for a tuner that will delete the DPF and EGR but will keep stock power levels or near stock power levels for "Off road" use only. His biggest thing is he doesn't want any timing added for longevity reasons. Also he doesn't want to pay the premium price for a Spartan or Mini Maxx.

He's looked at Gearbox Z and SCT. One problem is places like gearhead are only selling DPF on tunes.

What would you guys recommend for him? Also he would prefer a tuner that he can also use to monitor systems as well.

I have a used Spartan that I will sell at a descent price. It will need to be re-licensed with Spartan, but will be much cheaper than buying new. That will give him the monitoring capability as well.

He said he wasn't interested in getting a used tuner. Thanks for the offer though.

I could be wrong...but if he doesn't want to increase timing...and therefore isn't worried about the quality of tunes that are offered by any aftermarket tuning company, just get any old thing that will "delete" the DPF and EGR and run the "stock power" setting. No need to pay a "premium" for tunes you aren't going to use.

That being said...there is nothing wrong with buying a "used" tuner. "Used" in the sense of a tuner isn't really "used" or worn. Not sure what his hangup is about that. Especially since he could get a "premium" tuner for much less.

My opinion only..... The entire topic is a contradiction - might as well shop for a tuner at WalMart.

I'm just asking for him. He is not a fan of used electronics. I understand where he is coming from.

I understand at a certain level. I built the computer which enables me to type this message to you. However, my computer gets used much more than my diesel tuner does. I would take a good, first owner(or 2nd or 3rd) diesel engine tuner any day.

I appreciate the replies guys. He's bull headed about things sometimes. I haven't seen to many reviews on the gearbox z tuners on here and other diesel sites. Anybody got any positive or negative experience?
