01 Ranger won't crank
Hey guys. Trying to help my brother get his truck going. It's a 01 Ranger 3.0 V6 5 spd 2wd. He drove home from work then the next morning wouldn't crank over. Turn the key and it doesn't even attempt to crank. All dash lights, headlights, etc come on. Battery is good. Took starter out and tested at parts store. Tested good. Clutch switch was good. Replaced ignition switch with no change. If I jump the solenoid on the starter it will turn the engine over. When turning the key I can hear the starter relay in the fuse block under the hood clicking. All fuses were good. I found the main engine ground wasn't hooked up to anything. I hooked it back up and still nothing. All battery connections were good but cleaned them anyway. Not really sure where to go from here. Thanks!

Just to make sure...see if there is a thief light on the dashboard,,,thief light should blink every 3 seconds with key off,,,when key is turned on thief light should go off and truck should start,,,if thief light does not go off when key is turned on then you have a PATS issue ( passive anti thief system),,if light does go off then make sure starter selinolde is getting fire from relay,,,i would also change the clicking relay first just to make sure it is good,,,just because it clicks does not mean it is good

check the wire from the relay to the starter,,,with key on use volt meter or test light to see if starter is getting power when key is in start position,,,one person turn key while other checks to see if starter is getting that voltage with light or meter,,,here is a link to wireing diagrams that might help,,,i think that wire might be blue with a stripe,,,but could be wrong about color,,,here is wireing link ------------- Search Wiring Diagrams

I had a no crank issue with my 2001 4.0L manual trans, Called AAA, best 58 dollar a year I spend, they took me to a shop that they thought could fix the problem. The shop said it's a dealer issue, remove and replace sliding contact assembly $115 at the dealer, diagnosed as PATS Transceiver Failed.
Dealer only remove and replace.
Forgot to mention, the cost of the part was $190
Part number F87Z 14A664 CC

Thanks guys. I haven't had a chance to get back over there yet but Dad didn't want my brother's truck sitting in the driveway anymore so had it towed to a shop lol. They said it was a PATS issue... which is odd because the theft light did go out on the dash. When he gets the truck back I'm going to go over it really good... see if they changed anything else
