Questions about buying a truck and ESP

All, looking at a 2015 F350 with 25K miles on it. I was wondering other than getting a Car Fax, Oasis if there was anything else I should look at? I've printed the window sticker and looked at Eits for build date.

I put about 10K a year on my car, an 8 year ESP will only get me to about 85K, do you think that's worth it? I understand a fuel related issue or emissions issue would more then pay for the ESP. Just wondering if its ever really used, I get the peace of mind factor. Any thoughts or comments are always welcome.

Had a F150 before, work truck. Had a few mods, what mods do you guys usually do that are warranty friendly? Intake would be obvious but anything else?

All ideas and comments are welcome!
Thanks.

I just bought an ESP for my F350. I have 26K on mine. I don't want to get stuck with a big bill if something goes boom. I plan to keep this one for a long time.

Forgot to comment on the mod's you asked about. I'm personally not a mod kinda guy, but my suggestion would be to just drive it for awhile and then decide. These are already pretty stout.

Fancy mirrors and radiator seem to be the most common use for ESP but we have a few regular members that had engine replacements covered or transmission solenoids.

Ford ESP plans are great for people that don't work on their trucks or people that want to avoid the $20,000 dealer charge for a new engine should something really bad happen. On the other side of the coin are people that argue that an ESP plan is a poor bet. Like all insurance products, of course they are. Until you have a need.

In the next six months, I will exit my base warranty and will need to select a plan from Flood or Zeigler. In life, I carry plenty of insurance that I hope to never use and consider this just another plan. If you have savings and you don't mind the possibility of spending some of those savings getting your beast back on the road, you should skip the ESP plan.

At least you have thought about this. Too many people find FTE just after their truck breaks and they are either a moment or years out of warranty. They post things like their expensive truck was never supposed to break or how can a repair cost so much. My dealer just expanded their vehicle fixing area. I doubt that they did this because Fords never break. People with an ESP plan and rental coverage never seem to make high emotion posts except to complain that fixing their beast is taking too long. It would be great if fixing these beast was easier/faster and all parts were stocked at each dealer location. Seems like that's never going to happen until we invent a parts printer and each dealer is required to have a printer.

One reason I convinced myself to buy the ESP this time around, is that I am expecting to have to replace the radiator at least once, and maybe twice in the life of this vehicle because Ford still has not addressed this issue permanently in the trucks up through MY 2016. We'll see how the 2017's fare. That repair alone is about $1200 at the dealer, depending on what part of the country you live in. So, based on that, for me it was a no brainer. Of course, now that I have the ESP, its just about a guarantee that the radiator wont fail.

Fords ESP will cover fuel system problems as long as it's not causd by FUEL CONTAMINATION.

Look at Flood Ford or one of the other discounters. You can get 8 years and short mileage with a variety of deductibles to meet your needs. This is often not explained well at the local Ford dealer.

These are insurance plans intended to make Ford money. But like health insurance these days, with bad luck the bills can get pretty high. It's no longer an option for many people to work on their own trucks, they have become so complicated, and often expensive proprietary tools are needed.

Thanks everyone for the feedback and info. I'm torn on the ESP because of the price but I do understand the insurance mentality. I don't mind working on my own vehicles but looking at how this engine is shoehorned into the truck and not having lift access for cab off repairs limits my options and abilities. I know they've done a good job but the cost for repairs is also astronomical.

As for the mods, I guess its really just and intake and a muffler delete? Again, want to preserve the warranty.

Any other threads or links I should look at?

Again, thanks guys!

Also, a buddy who has a 2016 Dodge put a stealth modules chip on his truck. I guess it plugs in before the PCM. Any thoughts on that?

I no longer believe in buying the ESP contract prior to the base warranty expiring because if you get in an accident or decide to trade the truck while in base warranty you get a partial refund for your ESP even though you never used any of it. I believe in waiting until you are close to expiring your base warranty and then purchasing.

Well, today was the day (Rodney quote). 33,000 miles and 2.5 years of ownership. Pulled the trigger on an 8 year and 125,000 mile extended contract. I really like my truck and have experienced no trouble with it. The 2015 year trucks seem to be pretty solid for the most part and I hope to keep my beast for another 5 years. Purchased from Zeigler Ford and will have some small payments over the next year. Not too painful.

Keep in mind, after 1 year old the price goes up. Not sure how much. If you are going to buy it anyway, do it before 1 year.

That's a valid point. The initial cost is $100 lower if purchased prior to 12/12,000 IIRC. You can also wrap the cost of the ESP into your truck payment if you purchase at time of closing. All very valid points.

That price increase was about $200 if I remember correctly. Like Bruce, I waited just over a year intentionally. I bought at about 25000 miles. I bought the 6yr/125K plan with $100 ded. I drive about 20K/yr, so I should be trading in while there is a little time left on this warranty which should boost trade-in value too. My 2011 was traded at 105K, and dealer would have gone higher had I been under 100K.

EDIT: I see Bruce verified it ws $100. Not much of a enticement to buy early when the whole thing is like $2500

ESP was worth it for me

bought a used 11 250 3 years ago. Only had 20 k on it.
Sonfar that has covered front main seal replacement, AC condenser replacement, radiator, water pump, 2 EGR coolers, numerous trips to dealer due to turbo issues, new turbo replacement, vacuum regulator? Can't remember what it was really called. If I didn't love this truck I would have been out of it a while ago... but the ESP has saved me thousands of dollars so far..... worth the added reassurance. Just need to have a good dealer shop to work with too. Oh and they cover rentals if your truck is in the shop more then a day....
