1977 F150 - Fuse block under the hood -- headlight fuse?

Hey folks, I'm trying to find the headlight fuse for my '77 F150. There's nothing obvious in the fuse block in the cab, under the steering column. I looked under the hood and saw that there is a block of 8 heavy fuses in the engine compartment above the left fender. I searched for a description of what those fuses are for but couldn't find one. My mission is to find the fuse for the headlights, but now I'm also curious about what those fuses are for.

Thanks!

Headlight switch should have an internal circuit breaker, no fuse.

I'm gonna say that isn't factory. I've never seen a fuse block like that in the engine compartment.

Assuming the headlight wiring is stock, there's no fuse, but there is a circuit breaker built into the headlight switch.

I'm guessing your bank of fuses under the hood is a PO construct for camper/trailer lights. Looks like he ran them in the various colors

I had a fuse panel like that on the passenger side of my 73 scs. I thought it was a po installation when I was fixing all the wiring problem. I later saw a post somewhere o here saying it's a original camper or trailer wiring harness.

I have owned both Camper Specials and Trailer Specials of various years, 74-79. Currently have a 78 CS and a 79 CS. None of the trucks I have owned had a fuse block as pictured.

Have never seen a factory installation using after market crimp terminations, either.

Agreed. My '77 SCS had the whole factory wiring harness for trailer hitch etc...and nothing like that was in my truck. I also purchased the truck from the original owner (old man Otto) and it was never modified or altered in any way shape or form.

Thanks for all the replies!

Everyone, thanks for the replies. Based on your help, I have figured out that it is in fact an after market fuse block for various trailer/running lights.

Happy Easter!

How about letting us know what kind of problem you are having, like no headlights or headlights come on then go off and then back on.

X2 on that fuse block looks like a previous owner install and not a factory or dealership installed deal.

There is a fuse integral in the head light switch, so that might be the problem or the problem could be your dimmer switch.

Thanks for the diagrams, 77&79F250. Super useful!

I'm actually not experiencing any problems. I'm designing a micro controller to automate some functions and I'm building into that an automatic headlight shut off so that I never need to get a jump because I left my lights on. /-:

Might be easier to wire in a "headlight still on" chime, like a key in the column or headlight on chime in newer vehicles, versus a auto shutoff. Keep up posted on the route you take, I am sure folks are interested to see what you come up with. I know I am.

A chime would no doubt be a lot easier... but a micro controller is oh so much more fun! 😃

FYI the headlight wiring harness is not the best design, and not something you want to tap into, you might look into one of these first?
