1972 L9000 Starter Removal Problem

Hi Everyone:

Starter Removal Problem:
The Starter in my 1972, Ford L9000 Fire Truck died and am trying to remove it. There are 3 bolts holding the starter in and two came out just fine. The third bolt I cannot get a tool into the area to remove it. There seems to be some type of cylinder in the way located above the starter that keeps me from accessing the third bolt.

Does anyone know what this device is that's located above the starter and can I just remove it or is it something a shop should do? It's located right above the starter bolt and is horizontal within the circle.
1972 Ford L9000 Fire Truck. What is the device in the circled area, as it's in the way of removing the third bolt on the starter which is located just below. Any ideas?

Looks like a crankcase breather tube on a 6-71. Instead of removing it try this. Most mounting bolts on that MT40 starter would have a 5/8 - 12 point head but could be a 15/16 - 6 point. Use a 3/8 drive shallow socket with an extension. Then an adaptor to a 1/2 drive. Put one of the other bolts back in and remove it last. Do not save the hardest bolt for last.

Tenwheeler - We did exactly what you mentioned above and it worked. We were finally able to remove the old starter, had it rebuilt and then put it back in the truck. Thank You very much for your assistance. Here is a photo of the fire truck out of the garage with the rebuilt starter installed. It works great now. Thank You again.
