How about ebay? I've purchased a few NY plates on there before. I've also contacted dealers listed on ALPCA (The Automobile License Plate Collectors Association) to inquire about particular numbers/ letters. Hemmings may have listings for license plate dealers as well.

A few currently on Ebay:

I'm not sure if Florida DMV has the ability to look up plate numbers to see if they are available.

Found it - https://services.flhsmv.gov/mvcheckpersonalplate/
This way you can check availability before purchasing. I found a pristine set of un-used plates before and the number had already been taken. They would have been expensive wall decorations!

Bob the real find for a FL plate is one with the correct county number I think you are in Pasco Co and that would be county code 28.

I need one for 1953 FL county code 18.

Merten, I bought both of my florida plates at different places.i bought my 1951 florida plate at a pawn shop here in Hudson for $25,and it was in excellent condition-I bought a 1953 florida plate at a swap meet I paid $30 for it and it was in great shape.neither one on my plates had a county # on them like a 28-they were just regular numbers

Correct, but you can also use it to check the availability of a particular plate number. For example, say you ran across an original 1956 plate with the number "1956". Status: NOT AVAILABLE You would know that you couldn't register that plate. Whereas plate number "4-30075" says Status: AVAILABLE.

OK, just found a pretty complete explanation as curiosity got the best of me. Go here. I deleted my brief attempt I had posted here to inform. Earlier FL tags carried a wealth of information.

That 7 W would have been on a heavy passenger car, 3500-4500 lbs, from Orange County. See link above
