Your opinion on transmissions

I'll be looking to replace my trans not too long in the future. My mechanic suggest that I get a Ford reman and get the warranty vs having someone local rebuild. Are there better options? I do not tow anything heavy just a MC trailer and bass boat now and then.

Is your current tranny bad? If not you can add a shift kit and a triple clutch torque converter, then doing a 04-07 6.0 Powerstroke trans cooler and the tranny should live for a while.

Its still working just shifting hard. Has over 200k on it. A local trans mechanic said it will need to be re-built.
I'm all ears right now on the issue.

I was told Ford doesn't rebuild their reman trannies, they have some shop somewhere rebuild it. They may ad some updates to the transmissions but they are not going to throw much at it as they get paid a certain amount for the job. My mom had a Ford reman in her Explorer and it didn't last, but the Explorer 5 speeds are junk anyway. If you have a local shop that is good at rebuilding tansmissions you are probably better off. Yeah you can usually get a better warranty with the Ford bu tyou usually pay considerably more for the reman trans too.

My excursion had hard shifts in 2/3.

Do a search it's typically a broken accumulater spring or two.

$50 for a shift kit that replaces those springs and transmission is golden. I've put 20,000 miles on mine since I put new springs in and it's shifting prefect. It took me about 3 hours to R&R the accumulater body and install new springs. No need to pull transmission. Just drop pan and remove filter and remove accumulater body.

I think there is even videos on YouTube showing how to do it.

Thanks, I'll do some checking on the accumulator valve.

Trying to get the parts together. Do you remember how many quarts of oil you had to replace?

Know is a good time to do a complete fluid exchange. Mark Kovalsky iirc has a good right up in his sig on how to do it properly. And only use Mercon V.

I have read up on that. Yes, it would be a good time but will it work the same way with 6-8 qt. missing?

Yes and maybe.

If, when you get into the accumulater body and find broken springs than YES. Just put new filter and pan back on after spring fix and fill pan with new fluid. Than start the flush proceedure.

If there are no broken springs it may be a waste of money to flush trans if it's going south as your trans guy said.

I will be doing the accumulator in a week or so. Hopefully I will find broken spring.
So, if that is the case I will need around 25 qts of oil? 6 to refill and 19 to flush?

No,

The 6 is included in the 19 to flush. Pump takes fluid from pan so total including the 6 in pan is 19.
