A compression and or a leak down test should be performed to asses the condition of the rings and bore a scope of the bores may also help determine this. If the bore/rings check out ok then the engine does not need a full rebuild.

Just do the bottom end of the motor. It will mean dropping the crank having it machined and replacing the bearings. Rods and mains should be done.

Avoid running it if at all possible as eventually that rod will fail and ventilate the block then you will need to replace the engine.

You should be able to have that easily done for $1000 and most likly less.
I'm pretty sure the engine does not need to be pulled to do this work.

There are not many of these old bread trucks left and very few that were option with the auto.

It would be a bit of a shame to cut it up for an engine swap.

There are speed parts available for the 223, the bottom end work and intake/exhaust manifolds and carbs would fall with in your budget and still leave you with money left over.
Sure wish I'd seen this suggestion before committing to the rebuild. But I did finally decide to stick with the 223. Just need to find a new flexplate, starter and fuel pump. My mechanic says they were all damaged, but who's to say how. The rebuild will take 3 weeks here in Portland.

He had to remove several cabin panels so now I get to strip and repaint them individually. Will make sure to replace rusty fasteners with stainless steel.

Got a good peek at the frame and floor. Diamond plate over 1/4-inch steel "joists," it looks like. Pretty saggy in spots. Starting to formulate an insulation, decking, wiring, window and cladding plan. Learned how to replace rivets. Considering solar panels on the roof, though not impressed with current technology.

Hoping to get 12+ mpg all the way to the Pelican Brewery and back, at 50+ mph through moderate grades. Wouldn't that be an adventure.

Just an update to say I got the engine running and she drives!

I need to replace my gas pedal soon if you have any sources. It's connected via duct tape.
