Yes, the blend door is behind the dash and is difficult to get at. Ford dealerships would quote you thousands of dollars for the repair because of the time involved in removing the dash.
However, there are several effective "work-arounds" that people have come up over the years which don't require dash removal...do a search of this forum using "blend door" as your keywords and you will get back a bunch of info on the subject.

The problem is that Ford let their accountants design their blend door. It's a cheap plastic and it quite often breaks.
If it really needs a blend door, there are two ways to go about this. One, as stated, is to tear the dash apart and fix it properly. This is an $800-$1000 fix at the dealership, or a day in your time. If you want the band-aid approach, Dorman has a fix where you cut into the heater box and you install a new door without the dash disassembly. I think it involves duct tape and redneck engineering.
If you do it properly, there is some company that makes an all-steel replacement door that is a permanent fix, ~$120, IIRC.

Most of the blend door failures occurred when the new dash configuration came out in 1995 and continued on through the late 90's. This isn't to say there weren't the occasional exceptions after Ford made a revision(s) to cure the problem (your 08 is well beyond the cure being implemented). So with that said, you could have a problem with the actuator itself (or items that operate it such as the control on the dash) and not the door, so with that said you might find this video helpful in determine this:
