1989 F150 Long Tube Headers

I just wanted to clear the air. I did quite a bit of research prior to going for it, but I decided that if i was going to go for headers, i would do long tubes. But, long story short, THEY FIT. I read tons of posts everywhere that long tube headers don't fit, and there was one person (not sure where, and I'm sure I can't find the post) who said they did fit. But I have an 89 302 with a 4 speed manual with granny, and they fit. Albeit I've been a tech for years and I have a welder and cutting tools all over the place, but it's doable. If you're looking for a direct fit, maybe not. You have to bend a 90 degree off the drivers side header and be creative to get it over and past the trans and cross member with a little welding, but the headers and exhaust do fit if done properly. Working on a true duals setup. Pics to follow.

Which headers did you go with?

I think people generally get nervous at the thought of long tubes needing a new Y pipe (custom exhaust).

All right! I'd like to know which ones you used as well. Looking forward to the pics! I'm hoping to use cheap ones, like less than $200, and get em jet-hotted. I'm in OK, so why not... Then, hopefully I can weld the rest of the pipes myself. The exhaust system is about gone to rust, anyway, so instead of replacing I'm upgrading.

I clamped in case I ever need to pull the transmission. The drivers side clears the slave. Very very minor frame trimming on right side. It cleared but only by 1/32. I trimmed to give clearance so the engine torquing back and forth didn't hit

I used flowtech long tubes. Available at an advance near you. They are cheap and don't look bad. I painted them prior to install because they are only steel.

Sorry for the long delay. Forgot I posted this, but I'll try to get some photos shortly.

Yeah the current Flowtechs are about a foot longer than they need to be and hang much lower than necessary. I had an original set of Flowtechs on my '90 F150 about 15yrs ago that fit much better, then Holly bought the company and changed the design for whatever reason.

Thumbs up

I still have Hookers on my 302 (AOD/2x4), fit decent enough. I wish I had gone with the Super Comps as I think they are of better quality than the regular ones I picked up.

Pal has Pacesetters, fitment is good. I will probably upgrade to those when I buy heads again.
