I am going to undercoat the bottom of my cab (possibly the wheel wells) and I was wondering what specific product you would suggest. I have the cab off of the frame right now, so I figured now is a perfect time to lay it on its back and get all the nooks and crannies. I have looked at Por15, Bedliner materials (roll on / spray), Krylon Hammered, etc.. I would love this groups thoughts.
I haven't tried it yet, so I have no experience with it, but the bedliner SPI sells gets used alot for undercoating. It also gets used for sound deadening on inside of door panels. If you go to their site, Southern Polyuerthanes, Inc. , and go to the forums, there is a section devoted just to their bedliner. It answered all of my questions.
As I have been using their primers and clear coats and find them to be excellent products, I plan on using their bedliner as undercoating/sound deadener when I get to that point on my build.
Sandblast or scuff the existing floor (if the paint is in good shape). Spray the floor with a good DTM primer, 2 coats. When dry scuff again and apply UPOL Raptor or other two part bedliner...here is what it will look like
How do you plan on applying? Ie. Do you have a paint gun that can handle undercoating/ bed liner? If so, there are a lot more options. The tintable bed liner products are pretty nice if you want to match body color.
I went rattle can and liked how the 3M Professional Grade Rubberized turned out. It was more expensive, but it was a little smoother than the Dupli-Color version. Both were better than one I picked up at a swap meet that was pretty gloppy had more of a brownish tint to it. The bed of my truck has a spray can Rust-Oleum Truck Bed Liner. It is a more textured finish (not rubberized) and seems pretty durable.
Tintable is also available and will work just as long as you have some of the original paint/tint to add to it. Not too many people crawling around under your truck to see if the underfloor matches the outer paint color though.
Some good suggestions. I like the Raptor product Charlie. I wish I had known about that several months ago. After clean and prime I just used rattlecan Krylon Truckbed black. It dried very hard and the bond seems solid.
Ive used both rattle can bed liner and undercoating, If I had to say the only difference is the undercoating seems to be a little thicker softer. Maybe better for sound and rock dents. I like that raptor stuff, May give it a try once I get to the flooring repairs on mine.
The Raptor hardens pretty well, if you use it (or any other coating for that matter) be sure you scuff up the panel well prior to spraying to give the coating some tooth to grab onto. Here is my 40 Ford coupe floor that I coated in the same manner as the 56 F100 pictured above.
these are all great recommendations. I was almost to the point of just using a Krylon Black, then these liners came into play. Now I am more confused. I am only doing the undercab for now, I just want to get this cab back on the frame. I have an air compressor, but that is it.
