Reoccurring Burning Smell - The Big Mystery
Hi All,
Just clocked 7200 miles on my PowerStroke. Since 700 miles I started noticing a strong burning odor but no smoke, no engine lights on or loss of power. Dismissed it as new truck break in. About the 3rd time I went to dealer and the tech looked it over. He thought there could be some grease on the rotor creating the smell. ???
Went back to dealer a month later, the lead diesel tech asked if Ihad the A/C on that possibly it was the condenser being used for the first time. So today I get out of the truck and the burning smell is super strong. Still can't pinpoint the exact area but noticed it was coming from the passenger side.no leaks or anything obvious.
Any advice or similar stories would be more than appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I never considered or associated the burning smell with a regen because that never occurred on my 2011 6.7. But I bought my last truck with 30k miles and this one new.
If it happened about every 300 miles, with my mileage, that's about 20 times. I would guess I've noticed the smell maybe 10 times. Towing and empty, city and highway, AC on and off doesn't matter.

The burning smell is almost certainly a regen. Have the dealer enable the Exhaust Filter screen...if you start smelling the burning smell shortly after your exhaust filter svcreen reads 100%, it is a regen. You may also notice your fuel economy plummet during this period. The 2017 regen strategy is different than the 2011-2014 and even the 2015-2016 strategy. It seems regens are more frequent now.

Its possible still, if you didnt get a complete regen, mine usually stops at 22% but have had one or 2 stop at 80% for some reason, probably didn't start soon enough and I shut the truck down.

Thanks Troverman. You'd think a Ford diesel tech would have at least suggested a possible regen but I guess that's why I have you guys as a good backup.

The OP said a burnt rubber smell. Everyone else is talking about a burnt smell. Splitting hairs, but I've smelled a strong burnt rubber smell a couple times and definitely not a regent, as I'm sitting here watching the regent percent screen while the smell is occurring. --EDIT: I sat for awhile, and then drove for awhile and the truck was in regen. It seemed to pause the regen at times and the smell went away. The percentage definately was moving down as I was driving and I jumped out to smell it and it was the same burnt rubber smell.
