Uncle Elvins 48 F1

Hello from North Dakota,
The story is as a kid growing up dad farmed elvins land and I remember this old red truck sitting behind the grainery that I would pretend to drive and play in, always thought it was neat. Great uncle elvin died in 1988 and a neighbor bought the truck with hopes to restore it some day. Fast forward 29 years (I'm 43 now) I hear a rumor that he bought another project and wants to sell the 48. I called him up and yes he wants to sell! Dad and I went over to check it out and it's not in too bad of shape. It's been sitting inside since he's owned it. It's got the flat 8 and a 4 speed, runs and drives. He put in an aluminum radiator and messed with the water pumps, had trouble with it getting hot. Floor boards are rusted out, few dings here and there. Would love to hear what you guys think about condition of truck. He wants 500$. The radiator itself must be a few hundred bucks. The serial number on truck is 88RC116715 and also the stamping on the firewall is hard to make out but I think it reads sp51405819531. I would like to know what those numbers mean. I have read other threads on that stamped number and it seems every one is a little different. Does the SP stand for Saint Paul? Thanks for reading this long post and I'll attach some pics.

He actually wasn't home I called him and he said just go over and check it out. I told him I'd take it. Lots of machinery in the way couldn't get it out yet anyway. It's not going anywhere.

Runs and drives, family truck, $500.... I would be sleeping in it until I could get it home.
Welcome to the sickness. It starts with few symptoms then grows. By the time you realize how bat the sickness is, you enjoy it.

Take lots of pictures then take some more.
Get a shop manual and this pdf book:
https://www.hipoparts.com/1948-56-fo...ts-catalog-cd/
After you have done that, take more pictures and label everything. The moment you turn away from a part you have removed, you will forget how it goes back on.

Thanks for the great comments! I figured you guys would like it. Anywhere in that stamped number is the color code? It's been red as long as I can remember and I'm sure it's the original color. Would like to no what ford called it.

The family history and memories alone are worth $500 even if it were a complete basket case. I'd buy and have it as yard art with a great story. And since its drivable it worth a Haeckel of a lot more. From the pictures it looks in pretty decent shape and everything it needs is pretty easy to find.

As mentioned before, welcome to the board and to the sickness!

That is a great looking truck with a great story. Worth every penny of $500. We can help you with the parts that you need. Based upon your description they are available from several sources.

Welcome to FTE.

So great you have kept it in the family - there is a lot of potential in that truck. Looking forward to the updates.

Thanks I'll definitely have some questions. When I get her home I'll look it over good and start making a list.

When you get the chance to look closer or get a picture, we can sort out the firewall number. Yes, SP is the Saint Paul assembly plant. It didn't move too far from its place of origin. The red looks to be 70 yr old Vermillion Red. If the color was included on the firewall stamping it will be the number 2

I only have a couple of 48s from St Paul in the data base and they both have unusual firewall stampings. Hopefully one of the first three after SP is a letter that will tell you the date of manufacture.

I hope you get it and have a blast with it!!
