Couple questions, Turbo, injectors

Got a most stock 96 f250 4x4 7.3.

My truck has a little more than 250,000 miles on it. I was thinking it might be time for new injectors and maybe a new turbo. It runs fine but maybe it's time. Just did new glow plugs, and a totally new clutch.

1. Do they make a injector that is just a tad more than the stock ones and if so what brand, what do you guys think?

2. Same on turbo, is it time for a new turbo, if so is there one just a tad more power than a stock and again what are the thoughts out there.

Careful, it's a slippery slope. Upgrade one thing which will require you to upgrade something else, which will require you to upgrade two other things, etc., etc., etc.

1. Most here will only recommend Rosewood Diesel for injector rebuilds. Stock injectors are 90cc and their Stage 1s are 160cc. Many will also recommend efuel and HPOP upgrades with the Stage 1s.

2. It doesn't sound like you're really wanting to go crazy on this, so your best bet would be to rebuild your stock turbo with new bearings, O-rings, and wheel.

get a chip for a little more blip

a chip can gain you about 50 HP, that's a fairly good increase with it being 210 HP but if you tow...get an EGT gauge

I have thought about injectors, turbo, efuel, HPOP, IC and maybe getting 300-350 HP out of it. Then my wallet laughs at me and spits out moths.

Well my engine has never been into until I put the new glow plugs and harness in it. The clutch was the second I had put into it. I figure with more than 250,000 on it I had better start thinking injectors and along with that a turbo....so what do you guys think? how many miles can I get on the injectors and turbo.....I would like a little more power but my truck is running just fine and I really don't need the power.....I've had that truck 18 years and plan on having until the day I die....so what about a chip and from who and how much $$. Looking for info and options and I don't want to end up sitting in the middle of nowhere, I already did that one time 4 hours outside winnecnucca nevada in the middle of nowhere.

I'm with Darrin (DCLack) the thing I can suggest first in the list is getting to run 100% before modding such as checking injector O rings, exhaust leaks specially on the up pipes, an EGT gauge (exhaust temperature gauge) a boost gauge and at a minimum the down pipe are a must. If your turbo has no in or out play, dusted blades let it be. A tune will most certainly wake your truck up but can also make your egts up if you don't have custom tunes. Look at my sig all these mods put a big grin on my face.

Besides the downpipe that Adam mentioned put a 6637 air filter on from Riffraff. As far as injectors, call Rosewood and ask about 'baby' injector's that are 130 cc's.

Thanks Guys, my truck is mostly stock. I do have that big air filter and I have a few guages of which the trans temp is part of them but not the boost gauge. I also have the bb mod. I think that is it.

I searched for injector life span and it seems 200,000 is about it. Mine is quite a bit more than that and I think I need to start planning on replacing them and more than likely the turbo also, it has the same miles. So I thought I would do a bit of pre-planning and see and think about my options. What are baby injectors....if I'm replacing mine it may what I want.....I would like a bit more get up and go but my teenage days are way behind me, I'm 66 and just want my truck to run nice. If I go with the babies what else do I need to go along with it.................or maybe just stock and a chip

Talk to me Guys.

There's no real life span on injectors , my work truck had stock injectors and O rings and it had 380K? When I replaced them with Rosewood reman injectors I sent out. The injectors were still working good when removed.
There's a big variable in the equation how much are you willing to spend?

honestly, if your truck is running fine and your aren't really looking for more power then I would just let it be and roll on. I have 295k on my injectors and they are plugging along just fine. If you start having hard start problems or it is smoking then you could look at doing some repairs/upgrades.

If you are wanting a little more punch in the bowl then get an EGT gauge and get a chip from any of the site sponsors and you will waken the old girl up quite a bit.

Before I knew about Rosewood I read about Swamps baby injectors and Beans baby injectors. I'm just guessing but I would think Jim at Rosewood could do a set.

I'm 66 also, lol!

I pulled my stock injectors at 325000 and they are now in another members rig here a d they are clicking right along. I sure wouldn't be worrying about anything if its running fine

OK guys you have convinced me to stay with same injectors. What about the turbo, same thing? Seems to be running just fine, I'm satisfied and it runs the same as it has since the day I bought it.

Maybe I'll just do a Chip.....what's an approx amount those and who have you guys had good luck with, years ago I kept hearing about tony wilder on this forum, any suggestions???

I guess I should ask my St. Bernards they actually own the truck they just let me drive it. Getting ready to head out to Missoula this morning, maybe see a Moose or even a grizz if I'm lucky, bout time for them to wake up. Did see some awful big tracks down my road last week.

Anyway thanks for all the help through the years guys.

If you want to go big/bigger, then you'll definitely need new injectors. But if you're just concerned about mileage, then just check and fix any oil/fuel leaks and you'll be good to go many more miles. You should check your fuel filter; if it's black and oily, then you will need new injector O-rings.

As someone already said for the turbo, pull the intake boot and check the shaft for play and the fins for damage. If there's too much play, a simple bearing rebuild kit would fix that. If the fins are damaged, you can get a new upgraded wheel; in fact you could get one anyway if you want to get a little more out of the turbo.

Check out Riffraff for parts and prices. Good place to shop with excellent customer service.

Forgot about the chip. I'd recommend getting a Hydra; it costs more initially, but it save you time and money down the road if you ever do upgrade to larger injectors and need a custom tune.
